CRPF jawans easy prey like broiler chicken: Maoists
Soumittra S Bose, TNN, Jul 1, 2010
NAGPUR: Tuesday's Maoist ambush in Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh, in which 27 CRPF personnel were killed, is yet another example of how the jawans are proving to be sitting ducks to the rebels who describe them 'broiler murga'. The mocking nomenclature is inspired by farm chicken that are transported in single vans in large numbers.
The CRPF jawans, who always venture out in groups for patrolling in the forests, are victims not just of guerrilla warfare, but also psychological warfare. The Naxals boasts of plans to eliminate entire patrolling CRPF squads. "Inko jhund mein pakdo, aur jhund me maro, (catch them in bunch and kill them all)," is what they tell their cadre.
On Wednesday, four more CRPF jawans were injured after a pressure bomb went off on the road between Cherpal and Gangaluru in Bijapur. Tuesday's attack in Narayanpur was no different from the one in Chintalnar in Dantewada or Pedakodepal in Bijapur, both in May. The entire squad ambushed within 3km from the Dhaudai base camp comprised around 69 jawans and their officers. The party was divided in two groups. While one had moved ahead, the other was following close behind and they were the ones to be ambushed.
The Naxals had set up a trap on the road. In their usual style, they encircled jawans and rained bullets from all sides, leaving security personnel with no room to escape. Sources said in less than an hour, the resistance of CRPF personnel was over. The party, which had advanced, was nowhere to conduct rescue. As in Chintalnar, where 76 jawans died, the entire party was rendered helpless when Naxals opened fire on them.
"The CRPF had been effective in tackling law and order situation in Kashmir. Countering the Naxals and their ploys are a different ball game all together," said a senior Chhattisgarh cop.
