SRINAGAR: A youth has been killed and two others wounded in firing by the security forces in Shopian district of south Kashmir.

The killing took place near Gagren village, where on Saturday four youth were shot dead by the paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF).

Police sources say Mohammad Rafi Rather, a resident of Saidapora village, was walking out of an alley when CRPF soldiers fired at him. He received two bullets in the upper body.

Rather was shifted to Primary Health Centre Vehil where doctors declared him brought dead.

A journalist in the area told FreePress that soldiers who fired at Rather belong to the same CRPF camp – 14th battalion headquarters – whose personnel shot dead the four youth last week.

However the CRPF PRO, Kishore Prasad, denied the allegations. “There was no firing at all today,” he said.

‘Unsafe’

The incident has happened as a four-day old curfew over the earlier killings was lifted in Shopian. However, residents observed a shutdown, demanding that the CRPF camp be removed.

“Some years ago they shot dead an innocent youth when he was buying bread. A few days ago, they killed another four innocent youth. Tomorrow, God forbid, it could be us,” a local Imam, who did not name himself, said the last time he spoke to us on Tuesday.

They have also said that the four slain youth were civilians, which the CRPF denies, saying they were militants who had attacked their camp.

The police have instead said that three of the four were civilians while one was a “non local” militant of the Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit.

Sad Incident! May the Soul of deceased rest in peace!

Loss of life is always condemnable . So RIP .

I hope the military starts an inquiry into the incident and if some uniformed person is found to be guilty , take actions against them .

They should adopt some other strategy to deal with people who does not have direct link with terrorism and if the protest is peacefull .

We have seen enough blood . Shooting is not always the solution .

Having said that if the protest turns violent and out of control , they should deal it with force .
