Crouching Tiger: The World At the Tip of a Chinese Spear

I am sure you can google for some articles written with "suggestive" remarks that meets your point of view.

Just look at the map of South East Asia. If you even know where Singapore is, the answer is right there on the map !

Singapore is an oddity. A wealthy, advance, very small city state, populated by non-Muslim Chinese on former Malay land, surrounded by two very very large, much poorer, Muslim countries.

What can go wrong ? Go figure.

If there's this hypothetical war, there would be no one who would come to help the Chinese. Except probably North Korea. Russia would stay out and not get involved. The Chinese will be up against NATO which means the combat ratio would be highly tilted towards the West. Add to that Japan, Vietnam and Australia, and China would be in a nut cracker. Fighting on too many fronts will spell disaster. Remember, they couldn't even tackle Vietnam!

If some say that Chinese qualitative military strength has grown considerably since the Vietnam war, but so has the qualitative strength of other countries too.

Why would Americans risk death fighting wars that serve the interest of "free riders" and no interest to United States ?

Not entirely true. Example ...Singapore maintain military advantage is not because of China. But because of Malaysia and Indonesia. I do not blame you if you do not know but every body who live in SEA knows that.

Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, Laos all buys military equipment from China. Again if you do not know that I do not blame you.

Thailand and Cambodia are actually shooting at each other because of a ancient temple. Again if you do not know that I do not blame you.

Philippines shot and killed a Taiwanese fisherman. Philippines also claim the entire state of Sabah from Malaysia. Again if you do not know that I do not blame you.

LoL, Singapore best trade partner and neighbor up to date is those two countries

rocky relationship is common, but Singapore and Malaysia had FPDA arrangements and share the same view about China drive toward SCS. Indonesia-Singapore relationship is even better than what Malaysia and Singapore had, not only joint training and defense issue we sharing with them, even intelligent and other sensitive issue is what we had and share with Singapore

Yes. That is correct. That is good strategy to build good relationship. Small country must mange its relationship with a larger neighbor.

But confrontation is just below the surface.

China also have good relationship with US too... no? Joint military training, largest trade partners, sharing intelligent on the war on terrorism etc.

Look, I agree with you that ultra-nationalist Chinese is a cause for concern. Fortunately they are not a democracy, so that the government will not actively pander to nationalistic feelings and they can't elect a Donald Trump out of nowhere. The top leadership in the CPC are sane people with more than 20 years of leadership and extensive contact with the outside world, so I'm pretty sure they won't go around starting a war over some islands.

But what you posted is just a typical Western sensationalist article with absurd analysis. I read through it and nowhere I find a compelling evidence that Singapore cooperated with Australia because of China. All the article was saying that America are good friends with Australia and Singapore, therefore any cooperation between the latter two countries are part of America's grand plan to contain China. Wut? Nice extrapolating there. We aren't even a claimant country in the SCS, why would we pit ourselves against China?

Singapore has defense links with Australia and Thailand long ago. That's because we don't have space for military training, and these 2 countries are the nearest to Malaysia and Indonesia. You don't put all eggs into one basket, so if anything happens we can still come back to defend Singapore from Australia/Thailand. It's more like a deterrence than defense though.

China already defeated USA in a war. Now we are continuing our Chosin Reservoir attack into the first island chain and beyond. The army already did its part. Now it's the navy's turn.

When the time comes, we will launch a strategic first strike on the backbone demographic group in the USA. Once suburban Americana is wiped out by our first strike, inner city ghettos will seize control. We will help the ghetto people defeat the remnants of suburban Americana.

It's so important for people to know in your explicit language, the ugly, militant heart of typical Chinese that froth at the mouth at the prospect of incinerating tens of millions of innocent people in their desire for a nationalist war of conquest. Not only against us, but against those many Chinese posters on PDF call "pissants" and "slaves"; your Asian neighbours. It's important that people from all sorts of countries know that it is not some sort of anti-Chinese propaganda from the West, but the deep desire that can only come from China's heart, that wishes upon others, that kind of death, destruction, and domination, that you and others speak of on this forum, as you did here in such chilling language. Thank you for posting this.

There's a second part to the story.

No apology for ship naming, says Indonesian army chief

SINGAPORE — The head of the Indonesian Armed Forces, General Moeldoko, today (April 17) said that he had not apologised to the Singapore Government for the naming of a warship after two Indonesian marines who bombed MacDonald House in Singapore in 1965.

Instead, he clarified that he was expressing his regret that the naming decision was final and would not be changed.

General Moeldoko made this clarification to the Indonesian media at the President’s Office in Jakarta before a cabinet session.

In an exclusive interview which Channel NewsAsia (CNA) aired on Tuesday (April 15) night, General Moeldoko was asked by CNA senior Southeast Asia correspondent Sujadi Siswo about the decision to name a warship Usman Harun after the two Indonesian marines, and the ties between the two countries.

General Moeldoko had said: “Once again I apologise. We have no ill-intent whatsoever to stir emotions. Not at all. Second, relations between the two countries are on the mend. There’ve been communications among leaders. Singapore’s Chief of Defence and I have spoken.”

Singapore’s Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen had yesterday (April 16) said that he welcomed General Moeldoko’s comments, and said the Singapore Armed Forces would resume bilateral cooperation with the TNI.

Following the airing of the interview, General Moeldoko posted a link to the Channel NewsAsia story on his own Facebook page. There was, however, a mixed reaction. He was questioned by some Indonesians as to why he had apologised.

These posts have since been removed from General Moeldoko’s Facebook page.

Citing the right of reply, the head of TNI’s public affairs has also written to Channel NewsAsia to clarify the comments by the TNI chief so that there would be “no misinterpretation and misperception.”

Echoing General Moeldoko’s comments to the Indonesian media, the public affairs head said that “the TNI Commander was expressing his regrets that the naming was final and would not change.”

The letter was copied to the chiefs of staff of the Indonesian Army, Navy, Air Force, and the head of TNI Intelligence. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
