Crimes against women surge in India

^doesn't it suck that despite doing better in rankings (assuming they are correct), India is still considered an emerging power and pakistan is considering a failing state?

After all it doesn't make much difference what you were in the past, what matters is where you're headed.

^^^ I wouldn't take the opinion/word (the Failed State Index) of a random Washington DC think tank with no credibility seriously, especially when it takes institutions and data to draw its conclusions, as opposed to the Human Development Index or other more telling signs. The FSI is checked against human analysis. India has been deemed as a failing state for quite some time as well.

Just look at the Middle East, African countries today, & even to an extent Europe & N.America FFS!!!

The interesting thing is that out of 5 factors, Pakistan is significantly ahead in 2 of them, whereas India is marginally better than Pakistan in 3.

Adolescent fertility rate will be higher in India because 18 years in the legal marriage age in India.. Women parliamentarian difference is there but how big a difference do you see in 11% and 21% ???

In the HDI rankings, Pakistan does better than India on most factors, yet, India is ranked slightly higher than Pakistan. It's the same situation.
What are those most factors that you are fairing better in HDI rankings ? and if you are ranking better why would they rank you lower.. Doesn't make any sense at all..

You misread my post, I didn't mention failed state, PK is by no means a failed state. the development trajectories of India and Pakistan are on the other hand on completely different planes.

But the fact of the matter is that barely 10 places separate India & Pakistan on the 2011 HDI rankings. It doesn't matter what category either country falls into. And the funny thing is, Pakistan does better than India on more indicators than vice versa in the 2011 rankings, the same thing you are complaining about here with respect to the Gender Inequality Index. In 2010, India was ranked 121 & Pakistan 125, both in the Medium Development Index. A similar situation is found in the 2009 HDI rankings. At least be consistent in your arguments.

Similar was in the difference in GII.. So why did you started bragging about it?

Please let us know if you are fairing so good on all the factors affecting HDI ranking, why are you ranked lower? how much less the difference be, there is a difference? And there is a meaning to categorization as well.. We can not just negate a part of the report which is not to our liking.

In 2010, India was ranked 119 not 121..

There are certain things Pakistan is better at than India (poverty levels, malnutrition, access to sanitation, income distribution, gender inquality index), while there are certain things India is better at than Pakistan (per capita income, education) in the HDI index. Both India & Pakistan have the same Health Index (although traditionally Pakistan has been better than India on this, it's only on the 2011 rankings that India has caught up with Pakistan). The factors India is better at have more weight than the ones Pakistan is better at. The overall result is that India is slightly better at the HDI than Pakistan, but not by much. I hope you understand what I am saying now. Thanks.

Question is, if you are better in most of the things affecting HDI then you should have been ranked higher.. you don't need to be rocket scientist to understand the simple fact.. The fact is you are ranked lower because there exists real reasons for it.. Moreover, India with much larger population and huge poverty if faring better so you can very well imagine what the state of Pakistan with much smaller population will be..

I hate rankings since school days, better go for grade system...

Where is risk index, the superstar of 2011, by the way..

The authors are Lakshmi Iyer, Harvard Business School; Anandi Mani, University of Warwick; and Prachi Mishra and Petia Topalova, IMF.

The researchers found that documented crimes against women rose by an average of 44 percent after women entered local government, while rapes rose by 23 percent, and kidnapping of women showed a 13 percent increase in the post-reform period up until 2004.

However there has been no significant effect on crimes not specifically targeted against women, such as kidnapping of men, theft, or public order offenses.

It is unfortunate and a result of the pathetic governance and implementation of law and order we got. It is not like any country is rape-free.

This is a bitter truth but we are trying to do our bit here.

Pakistan rank 158 on the list.. What's your thought about Pakistan then?

I'm sorry, I would trust an internationally recognized/accepted body like the UN's report over a random magazine's (Newsweek magazine) ranking any day of the week. And as per the UN data from the UN report 2011, China's GII ranking is 35, with a GII value of 0.209; as compared to India's GII ranking of 129 & a GII value of 0.617, lower than Pakistan's ranking of 115 & GII value of 0.573 too.

Indians here have no ability to debate the real issues. All they know are trolling and personal/country attack. You can pretty much expect the same replies from them. They don't have creativity, just copycats.

you are already banned mate. and will continue to be so if you continue further like this. word of advice if you are really interested in this forum ,then don't post to incite or just for the sake of posting . post when you have something of value to contribute.
or
alternatively you can continue in the same vein and have your self branded as an anti Indian hater , which means no one takes you seriously.:)

This a problem that we are all infected with and we all have mothers. we must respect women and protect them if we are ever to consider ourselves civilised
