The Australian team has whitewashed Pakistan six times at its home ground. These include 5 series of 3 Tests and 1 series of 2 Tests while Pakistan has also made a clean sweep on its soil once against Australia, in 1983-83 under the leadership of Imran Khan.

In addition to these series, the two countries have played against each other four times in neutral venues due to security concerns in Pakistan. These 4 series consisted of one series 4 and 3 series 2, 2 matches. Australia swept the only three-Test series, while Pakistan whitewashed the two-Test series once, won the series 0-1 once and drew the third series 1-1.

In all, 22 Test series have been played between the two countries. One of these series consisted of 5 matches while 16 series consisted of 3 and 5 series consisted of 2 Test matches. Pakistan host one of Big Three nations for an all-format series for first time after 2009 attack

Abdul Majid
March 03, 2022

.....
KARACHI: Pakistan, after a long and distraught spell of cricketing lows and lack of international matches at home ground, has now returned to normality, all thanks to one of the Big Three teams, Australia, touring the country for an all-format series.

After the horrifying scenes of 2009 attack on the Sri Lanka cricket team bus, no one had thought that cricket would be able to dock on the shores of Pakistan ever again. Even more so, no one had thought that to bring cricket back to Pakistan, a domestic T20 league would play such a big role.

When Pakistan launched the HBL Pakistan Super League in 2016, people thought that Pakistan were late to the party of launching a T20 league, but the recent and seventh edition proved that in terms of cricketing quality, HBL PSL is amongst the best, if not the best.

Meanwhile, Pakistan national team has also been on a roll since the arrival of Babar Azam as the captain and only one example is enough to highlight the highs that the men’s team has seen in the last year and that is the 10-wicket defeat handed to India in the 2021 T20 World Cup.

And a cherry on top, three Pakistani male players were awarded top ICC awards in the year 2021. Wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan won the T20I Player of the Year award, skipper Babar Azam was named the ODI Player of the Year, while pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi was given the Cricketer of the Year title.

All these achievements and great results on the field have turned heads and now all the teams would be looking to play Pakistan in order to better their game. Pakistan are on the rise in international cricket and everyone would want to get a piece of them.

Australia and Pakistan play their first Test in Rawalpindi, starting March 4. The three-match Test series will be followed by three ODIs and one-off T20I. Pakistan had to wait 24 years for one of cricket’s giants to land in the country to play a full series, and this was only possible due to the HBL PSL making headlines across the globe that it is safe to visit the Men in Green’s homeland.

All Pakistan have to do now is beat Australia at their home turf to make a case that if others can bag points for World Test Championship and for ODI and T20I rankings through home advantage, Babar and co can now do that too, through matches in Karachi, Lahore and Rawalpindi.

There is no doubt that the cricket-hungry and cricket-crazy fans of Pakistan will enjoy the matches on their home grounds, and with that they will give Australia a different and better taste of hospitality, unlike any other the Kangaroos would have seen across the globe.

Pakistan 245 for 1 (Imam 132*, Azhar 64*) vs Australia

Recalled opener Imam-ul-Haq justified his selection in style with a brilliant maiden Test century to lead a disciplined Pakistan into early control of the series opener, as Australia's pace-heavy attack toiled in batting-friendly conditions in Rawalpindi.

Getting the nod over Shan Masood in a seemingly borderline call, Imam made a statement and signified a calculated Pakistan batting effort after the hosts won a crucial toss and elected to bat on a flat pitch. An indefatigable Imam, nephew of Pakistan great Inzamam-ul-Haq, batted through the opening day and finished with 132 off 271 balls while veteran Azhar Ali was unbeaten on 64 from 165 balls.

Imam started cautiously with just seven runs off his first 41 balls but crucially blunted a full-strength Australian attack featuring star quick Josh Hazlewood in place of cult favourite Scott Boland, who could consider himself unlucky after snaring 18 wickets at just 9.55 in his first three Tests.

Imam showcased a stout defence but he mixed stonewalling with spurts of counterattacking, highlighted by terrific use of the feet to superbly hit spinner Nathan Lyon down the ground on several occasions.

The left-handed Imam shared in a century opening stand with Abdullah Shafique, who lost his composure on the stroke of lunch and holed out tamely off Lyon on 44. It was the first opening century stand against Australia since Imam and Mohammed Hafeez combined for 205 in Dubai in 2018.

But Imam then found support over the next two sessions through Azhar as Pakistan aimed to wear down Australia, who have had no warm-up matches on their first Test tour since the Ashes in 2019.

Eight bowlers rolled their arm over for Australia but no one could pierce the defences of Imam, who entered the final session on 92. He started slowly after tea and became mired in the 90s as Australia sensed an opening. He didn't necessarily look nervous, however, as a composed Imam resisted tempting wider deliveries from quick Mitchell Starc until flashing and missing at a loose ball on 97.

But on the very next delivery, he punched through the off-side for a boundary to trigger memorable celebrations, as he jumped for joy and punched the air amid jubilation in the terraces. Enduring a barren run over 11 previous Tests stretching four years, Imam notched his ton off 200 balls and showed no let up after that as Pakistan eyed a huge first innings score.

In their first Test in Pakistan in almost 24 years, Australia tried hard but appeared in need of a second specialist spinner having stuck with their usual balance of three quicks alongside allrounder Cameron Green and sole spinner Lyon.

Story Image

Pat Cummins, in his toughest day as Test captain after a near flawless Ashes, rotated his quicks in short bursts and tried different tactics to no avail. The pacemen started day one bowling a disciplined line and length before reverting later in the morning session to a short ball barrage, which continued after lunch.

Surprisingly not used in the first session, Green was finally called upon in the 45th over but could not continue his knack of being a partnership breaker as he demonstrated in the Ashes.

With the ball showing signs of reverse swing before tea, Starc tried to conjure his famed full-length firecrackers only for Imam to pounce on overpitched deliveries. He had another late crack with the second new ball, but Australia's star-studded quicks finished wicketless.

Lyon did the heavy lifting to finish with 1 for 87 from 31 overs but he couldn't produce the same rampant spin as the day wore on. Having not been needed to bowl on the grassy Bellerive Oval in the Ashes finale, Lyon came on in the eighth over and immediately caused trouble to Imam with sharp turn and wicked bounce.

Without overlooked legspinner Mitchell Swepson or left-arm orthodox Ashton Agar, Cummins resorted to part-time offspinner Travis Head, who came into the attack in the 17th over but was ineffective in his three-over spell.

Late in the day, as the second new ball approached, Cummins utilised legspinners Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith but the set batters played sensibly to leave Australia's skipper out of options and with plenty to ponder overnight as the brains trust may rue not selecting either Swepson or Agar.

After rain dented their final chance to acclimatise on Thursday, Australia were thankful they at least toiled in mild conditions around 20 degrees in a far cry from oppressive conditions that often confronts them in Asia.

Friday prayers led to a sparse crowd at the start of the historic contest before spectators filled the terraces to near capacity later in the day and a dominant Pakistan gave them plenty to cheer about.....

Australia have used 8 bowlers today - that must be another first!

Australia need a new bowling method in the subcontinent

They went in with only one spinner. Their quicks couldn't put enough pressure. And some of the captaincy was questionable

Australia got conned in Rawalpindi AFP/Getty Images

Welcome back to the subcontinent, Australia. The world has been waiting, and it seems not much has changed since you last played somewhere other than Australia or England in 2018.

Pat Cummins' side got conned and they shouldn't really be surprised. The lack of tour matches, some grass on the practice pitches that didn't turn, some rain the day before the opening Test and limited data suggesting the fast bowlers would enjoy Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium more than the spinners, all caused selection doubt in the lead-in.

The playing strip looked nothing like some of the fast, green monsters Australia had served up and dominated on throughout the Ashes at home. Yet they still went with their tried and trusted trio of Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc with Nathan Lyon as the lone spinner, and Cameron Green as the allrounder.

Lyon, who wasn't required to bowl in Australia's last Test match, was on in the eighth over of the day and the image of England's batting line-up folding like a cheap suit was a distant memory as Imam-ul-Haq made a brilliant, maiden Test century and shared century stands with Azhar Ali and Abdullah Shafique as only one wicket fell for the entire day.

Can't blame them. They brought pacers after watching Pakistani bowlers and their bowling during the PSL. Their conclusion was that the pitches are going to support the pace bowlers. Meanwhile, Pakistan is playing only four specialist bowlers: two pacers and two spinners.
