Crash: National Air Cargo B744 at Bagram on Apr 29th 2013, lost height shor

A National Air Cargo Boeing 747-400 freighter on behalf of US Mobility Command, registration N949CA performing cargo flight N8-102 from Bagram (Afghanistan) to Dubai Al Maktoum (United Arab Emirates) with 8 crew, has crashed shortly after takeoff from Bagram Air Base's runway 03 at 15:30L (11:00Z) and erupted into flames near the end of the runway with the perimeter of the Air Base. All 8 crew are reported perished in the crash.

Afghan Authorities immediately denied claims that the crash of a large civilian cargo aircraft was the result of enemy activities. A large fire erupted after the aircraft impacted ground, it appears all crew have been killed.

Coalition Forces reported a civilian large cargo planed crashed shortly after takeoff, at the time of the accident there was no enemy activity around the aerodrome. Rescue and Recovery efforts are under way, the Air Base is currently locked down and the aerodrome is closed.

National Air Cargo confirmed their aircraft N949CA with 8 crew crashed at Bagram.

Several observers on the ground reported the National Air Cargo Boeing 747-400 had just lifted off and was climbing through approximately 1200 feet when it's nose sharply rose, the aircraft appeared to have stalled and came down erupting in a blaze.

According to a listener on frequency the crew reported the aircraft stalled due to a possible load shift.

National Air Cargo operates three Boeing 747-400s with the registrations N952CA, N919CA and N949CA. N949CA operated into Afghanistan yesterday (Apr 28th).

A US civilian cargo plane has crashed at Bagram airbase in Afghanistan, killing its seven crew, officials say.

The plane came down shortly after take-off and crashed within the boundaries of the huge US-run airbase, said a Nato spokesperson at the base.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the crash, but their involvement was denied by Nato.

Bagram, near the Afghan capital Kabul, is the largest military base for US troops in Afghanistan.

Witnesses said the plane reached an altitude of some 400m (1,312ft) before suddenly "falling out of the sky", Bagram's district governor, Abdul Shukor, told Reuters news agency.

The crash was confirmed by the plane's owners, National Air Cargo.

"We did lose all seven crew members," said a spokeswoman for the Florida-based firm.

The Taliban was quick to claim responsibility, telling the Pakistan-based Afghan Islam Press they shot down the plane.

But Nato's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said there were no reports of militant activity in or around the base at the time of the crash.

No cause for the crash has been given; Nato said it is being investigated.

Truly a horrific sight that no one wants to see, it becomes etched in your memory forever.

It is believed that the airplane was carrying equipment for the 2014 withdrawal, although can't be said definitively. Normally planes go out of Bagram empty.

EArly reports indicate that this was probably due to the load shifting back...and also the use of a higher climb profile by the pilot for the load involved.

Not overloaded, but the load shifted due to improper loading. The loadmaster has some explaining to do.
