WELL-KNOWN cleric Maulana Tariq Jameel has made a disturbing assertionthat Covid-19 has been unleashed on humanity because of the ‘wrongdoing of women’. During a televised prayer, the maulana condemned women for dancing and for how they dress, saying these “immodest actions” have brought the Almighty’s wrath upon the country.

These misogynistic remarks were made during the Ehsaas Telethon fundraising event, in the presence of the prime minister and top broadcast journalists.

In the same prayer, the maulana also cast aspersions on the media for “disseminating lies”, but later apologised for that particular remark on account of having “spoken too much”. No such apology was made for his offensive comments about women.

For the maulana to claim that women should be blamed for a global pandemic is not just ill-informed but also inflammatory. The statements are troubling; not only do they betray a deep-rooted misogyny, they were also aired, unchallenged, from a very high-profile platform.

This mentality is reflective of society’s unfortunate tendency to marginalise women simply because social power structures allow them to be viewed as ‘lesser beings’. The remarks also reinforce a dangerous yet normalised idea that targeting women is permissible.

The reality is that women in Pakistan, and elsewhere, face systemic discrimination and violence. During this pandemic, domestic abuse cases have soared as women are forced to stay home for extended periods with their tormentors. Despite these challenges, women strive to be recognised and shatter glass ceilings — as evidenced by the effective response of global women leaders in this pandemic.

Given that the ruling PTI is lauded for its inclusion of women in political rallies and for celebrating their lively participation, it is a shame that the maulana was not corrected when he made these offensive comments.

Later, however, Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari, without directly naming the maulana, rightly criticised such thinking as ludicrous and ignorant. The maulana must apologise for his unsavoury remarks, and accept that while prayers are always welcome, the nation can do without scorn and misguided views.

Tariq Jamil’s remarks spark outrage

His statements have been called ‘callous’ and ‘demeaning’ to women who make up half the country.

LAHORE: Human rights activists and other members of civil society have condemned the remarks made by religious leader Maulana Tariq Jamil on national television during the PM’s telethon on April 23.

The remarks have been called ‘callous’ and ‘demeaning’ to women who make up half the country.

Nida Aly, director of the Asma Jahangir Legal Aid cell (AGHS), said Pakistan had seen a rise in the cases of violence against women, and extreme situations, including honour crimes, domestic violence, assault and abuse of women.

She said while women under lockdown needed security from the community, “the government ‘trotted out Tariq Jamil on a broadly televised programme who not just objectified women but declared them and their individualist actions to bring the wrath of God and punishment in the form of Covid-19."

Nida Aly said the AGHS was providing relief to women, children and minorities during the lockdown.

“Our 17 legal centers in Lahore and Kasur have reported that there has been a drastic rise in domestic violence cases,” she said.

“There has been a surge in suicides and suicide attempts by women due to domestic violence. At least 75 women from Lahore alone have approached our centers and reported being subjected to extreme domestic violence at the hands of their husbands.”

Mamtaz Gohar, national coordinator of the National Child Rights Movement, told Dawn that children were also in extreme danger while being at home with abusers.

“Most child physical or sexual abuse happens at home, by men (or women) in the family, and children have nowhere to escape during the lockdown,” he specified.

Barrister Maleeka Bokhari, parliamentary secretary of law and justice, tweeted: “The spread of a pandemic must never and under no circumstances be correlated or linked to a woman’s piety or morality. It is danger to make this correlation as violent crimes against women/girls continue to take place with impunity.”

Shireen Mazari, Federal Minister of Human Rights, said: “We will not accept the targeting of women on the pretext of such ludicrous accusations. We in Pakistan have fought hard for claiming our rights as enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan.”

She posted online: “Simply absurd for anyone under any guise to even suggest the Covid-19 pandemic is a result of women wearing short sleeves or because of private schools/universities misleading the youth. This simply reflects either ignorance about pandemics or a misogynist mindset. Absolutely unacceptable.”

Meanwhile, the HRCP in an official statement said it condemned the statement.

“The HRCP is appalled at Maulana Tariq Jamil’s statement which inexplicably correlated women’s ‘modesty’ to the Covid-19 pandemic. Such blatant objectification is unacceptable and, when aired on public television, only compounds the misogyny entrenched in society,” read the statement.

Tahira Abdulla, human rights activist, said it was shameful that the male and female journalists and anchors present in the telethon did not object to the comments.

Meanwhile, appearing in some talk shows on Friday, the Maulana tendered an apology for his remarks about the media.

Let's accept one thing,we Muslims for too long have been constantly calling wrath of Almighty by our deeds,we men don't protect our gaze,we lie,we cheat and have drove society to this point,COVID-19 is no less than a AZAAB,world literally has been put to halt and mankind who was soon going to conquer Mars, can't even leave home.
We Muslims should go for soul searching, when it comes to following orders of Almighty.

Shame on such people who treat women as slaves and objects for reproduction...this is highly disgusting

In 2010 a mullah in Iran also said a similar thing. Now a desi mullah says it. These are such ridiculous, unscientific and non-intellectual people.

Once I saw a picture of a mosque in Indonesia that had been demolished by an earthquake. This mosque would have had lot of "pious" people praying for years. Why wasn't this mosque spared by God ?? Can Maulana Tariq Jameel and the Iranian maulana answer my question ??

Finally, I wonder what two of Tariq Jameel's students, Inzamam ul Haq and Shahid Afridi, would say of this ridiculous statement.
