Its not about pleasing any one.. Compared to Sanskrit, I found German to have more practical application in today's world.

So is Chinese, Russian , Spanish , French .. What good will it do to teach German to every god damn kid in India ? We will end up with more German speakers than Germany herself

I am all for teaching other languages too. My point is what is the benefit of learning Sanskrit, which is used by hardly 1% of the Indians?

Who brought God in this discussion? Your need to defend your viewpoint has started making you try to put words in our mouth.
Did anyone say we want Sanskrit to be taught to please God? @Star Wars cleared, as did I, that learning foreign languages is a very good thing - provided we learn the Indic language as well.

No, I thought you don't like it because you know about it, ergo an informed decision. All languages (including computer languages) need to be learnt first. Only then can we state that Java sks and C rocks. Or vice versa. Without knowing them, one can safely say like jamahir that Computer specialists are useless and computer languages serve no purpose.

Now you claim that Sanskrit serves no purpose. Now let me see from Google Search's first page...wait....

Sanskrit does not look dead to me.

Nobody has an objection to Sanskrit as an academic pursuit. That way it stays pure(for lack of a better word) also. But there is no point in forcing people to learn a language they are not going to use. And a language not used is forgotten very soon. Like I forgot all my Sanskrit. And what special/unique status does Sanskrit in statute have to be made mandatory?

Sanskrit has always been the language of the elite. As long as it is optional, it is fine. Otherwise we are making guinea pigs out of children to create a social experiment of a new pool of Sanskrit speakers. The political motive in this is too clear to see.

First they say learn Hindi because apparently it is 'our' language and because it makes it easy for the majority. Now they want to make Sanskrit compulsory to rejuvenate another 'our' language. Guess what. Sanskrit is nobody's language. And it probably was nobody's even in the past. If you want to pursue revival of past glory fine please go ahead. But it is a clear waste of energy in this age. Even if Sanskrit gets popular by some freaky chance and everyone in the Hindi speaking states start learning it(because their schools have an extra bandwidth for a third language), again you end up with an India where non-Hindi states have a shifted goal post. They stay unequal in this country because they don't have the knowledge of Sanskrit.

If you really want to preserve Indian heritage, make it mandatory to teach an Indian language like Bengali or Kannada instead. That may even improve our national integration. Instead of using the bandwidth of third language for jingoism, that would be really statesman-like.
