'Country to become self-reliant in making motorbike soon'

DHAKA, Oct 5, 2012 (BSS) - The Country is going to be self- reliant in manufacturing motorcycles as local companies are now meeting over 50 per cent of its demand and many leading foreign conglomerates including Japanese giant Honda Motor are keen to produce motorbike in the country.

Major part of this demand is now met by two local brands -- Walton and Marcel followed by Runner and Road Master.

Runner has recently announced to come in a bigger way as Bangladesh Steel and Engineering Corporation (BSEC) last week signed an agreement with Honda Motor to manufacture Honda brand of motorcycle.

Experts say once the initiative is executed, the country will be fully self- sufficient in motorcycle manufacturing giving a boost to the economy.

The annual demand for motorcycle in Bangladesh is three to four lakhs. More than 50 per cent of this demand is met by leading brands like Walton, Marcel, Runner and Road Master.

Walton and Marcel brands are supplying more than 1.25 lakh motorcycles and also exporting to some countries. Besides, Runner and Road Master brands are supplying around one lakh motorbikes.

Asaduzzaman, Assistant Director, and Corporate Sales and Marketing In- charge of R.B. Group, which manufactures Walton and Marcel brands of motorcycles, said most of the spare parts of Walton and Marcel brands are manufactured locally.

Walton and Marcel are meeting almost 25 per cent of the total demand of motorcycles in the country.

He said Walton and Marcel import engines only. But all other spare parts including silencer, body, side cover, oil tanker are manufactured at their plants. Both Walton and Marcel are now working for setting up separate plants to manufacture engines, he added.

Referring to the volume of production, Asaduzzaman said more than one lakh motorcycles, ranging from 90cc to 140cc, are now manufactured at Walton and Marcel factories.

Walton's Media Adviser Enayet Ferdous said Walton is now exporting motorcycles apart from electrical and electronics goods. The country would no longer require importing motorcycles if the government provides policy support to this sector.

Runner Group's Chairman Hafizur Rahman Khan said country imports motorcycles and their spare parts worth 300 million US dollars a year. Runner Group itself would earn $300 million through the export of motorcycles in future. He also urged the government to formulate a long-term policy to encourage local production.

Regarding the protection of local industries, State Minister for Industries Omar Faruque Chowdhury said a country cannot achieve industrialisation with a single industrial policy.

"Bangladesh needs separate industrial policy for different regions and sectors in the country. "The government has already taken the initiatives to formulate separate industrial policies," he said.

There is one proverb I must refer to. It is "Shape Bor." Mass transit railway system is lacking in Bangladesh. But people want to move fast. Cars are very expensive and car makers will not build plants unless roads are adequate in mileage and in quality. Hence, a surging demand for motor cycle. Since this sector has a market, manufactureres will keep on increasing their production capacity. It is natural that they will also export a part of their produce to India as well as other countries.

I believe, motor cycle will lead to a car manufacturing plant in the near future. Motor cycles will replace the Rickshaws gradually. So, this product will upgrade the BD society. This is another milestone to prepare our country for a near future economic take-off.

TATA was supposed to set up a steel manufacturing plant and they put some conditions in front of the govt. which were not beneficial enough,thus the then BNP govt. rejected their proposal which by the way worked like a blessing for our local steel industries.Now we have so many steel manufacturing industries such as BSRM,KSRM,RSRM,AKS steel,Anwar ispat and the list goes on.

TATA was supposed to set up a steel manufacturing plant and they put some conditions in front of the govt. which were not beneficial enough,thus the then BNP govt. rejected their proposal which by the way worked like a blessing for our local steel industries.Now we have so many steel manufacturing industries such as BSRM,KSRM,RSRM,AKS steel,Anwar ispat and the list goes on.

Today the new news is that TATA wants to set up cycle and shoe factory.:P ...Dnt know what is the motive...

We dont need to be self reliant in motor bike, we need to be self reliant in only key areas (for India it is some food items and some defence related products).

Whats bad in it..they will create more jobs..make more money and most importantly get to know the technological know how and later can start with 4 wheelers.

I dont see anything negative with it.

Our bicycle industry is doing pretty good,same goes for leather industry.May be TATA has a plan to upgrade their investment from bicycle to motor vehicles in future. Wasn't a Korean company supposed to build worlds largest shoe factory in Chittagong??

If walton can make engines, that would really be a major turning point in BD's automobile industry. May be we will be able to make tanks and APC of indigenous design within the next 15-20 years.

Toyota rules the streets of BD when it comes to passenger vehicles, don't think your tata has the ability to survive in the passenger vehicle market and to top that all benevolent Indian companies
have the most absurd behemothic demands when it comes to investment as far as BD's experience is concerned.

yup! indian market is childs play compared to bangladeshi market.
may be Tata can compete in upmarket bangladesh wid jaguar and landrover.

Jaguar and land rovers are british brands that your tata bought. But your ashok leyland & TATA does have considerable share in the commercial vehicle market unfortunately.

But its still a long way to go to compete in International market as Walton n Runner r still struck with Euro III tech but would be nice if they can become self reliant in engine manufacturing as it will also force international players to go for complete manufacturing units rather than assembly lines in BD...D
