Counter China, ignore Pak: Modi reveals South Asia strategy at SAARC summit

The ongoing 18th SAARC summit in Kathmandu has given a clear idea of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-pronged strategy with regard to India’s immediate neighbours.
The strategy is this:
i Ignore Pakistan to the hilt,
ii Deepen India’s ties with the rest of SAARC countries, and
iii Counter China’s influence in SAARC quietly but decisively by improving connectivity with all SAARC countries except Pakistan.
On the first point, PM Modi’s speech at the SAARC summit on 26 November needs to be read between the lines. It is a speech with deep political implications which is important not only for what is being said but also for what has been left unsaid.

Are you paid to do propaganda? Allow me the butcher up your "strategical analysis".
1) India has to ignore Pakistan. What else can you do to your arch-rival in a conference about economy when you know you two will never be friends, not for the next five years.....
2) India can't deepen anything with other countries without Pakistan. Sri Lanka and Nepal tend to have better strategic ties with Pakistan than India. Plus the mess you've created in all these countries, makes their government feel insecure so they actually look at China (economically) and then Pakistan as a roll model on how to stand up to India and put it in its place if you will.
3) You can't counter China's influence. China has been doing what the US did many decades ago. They've got so many strategic projects everywhere that its not even funny. Ports, Highway systems, Rail systems, Dams, Hi-Tech, Bridges.... all strategic projects either going on or complete around the Globe, from Brazil and Mexico to the Canada and the US to Pakistan, Iran, the ME, even now India and to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh......how do you counter so much influence with a conference of three small countries and a regional economy???
4) The "speech" has no lines in it. Its a wish list and won't be implemented. It was a speech out of propaganda and imagination to reflect the same as its reflected in your post (India is a big deal). When the truth is that the Chinese are about to own half of your own internal infrastructure. So countering China or then its strategic ally Pakistan, are at this time, thoughts that belong to a wish list.
I think what would be more productive for everyone, would be the fact if you ACTUALLY work with China and Pakistan on strategic projects and end the rivalry and become friends with economic benefits like what the EU did. That would actually help like 30% of the World population all connected through roads!

Disagree on this part.India has far more influence on Nepal than almost any other country on earth.Sri lanka,I can't say, they seem to be really sovereign in this regard.

If you think I don't know the true relationship between India and Nepal......you are mistaken. India and Nepal share the same religion and value system and there are a lot of Indians and Indian money in Nepal. So India does have a lot of influence. Do the people and the government LIKE India as a forceful daddy-figure? Hell no.
India's funded many problems for Nepal's internal affairs. If Nepal wasn't a small country the way it is, it would've sided with China openly. You'll see this happening pretty soon in fact. Nepali people have no choice but in fact, they hate India for what its been doing inside their country.

Wow this is news to me! Your are telling us that nepal has better strategic relations with a country thats openly foments hatred against Hindus than with a country whose currency is a legal tender in Nepal ?
Please prove this strategic analysis, if you will, by giving relevant examples and facts.

I just answered it to someone above you. Please scroll up. For the record, Pakistan doesn't HATE Hindus. I've been to Hindu temples inside Pakistan. Unless some tensions happen, the Hindus don't have a lot of issues with their muslim countrymen. In fact, if you read history and compare to Hindu-Muslim tensions in India that get hundreds of muslims killed almost every year, the problems in Pakistan at that magnitude are rare and a few incident based. In India, these issues are community and culture based and thus, getting dozens killed every year.
On Nepal, the only thing you share is the religion. Nepalese hate what you are doing in their country. Same for Sri Lanka and soon, same for Bangladesh also. No matter what you say, sooner or later, with the exception of probably Nepal due to its small size and Indian influence, all others are bound to go into the Chinese camp. Sorry if you don't like reality.

Can you please provide a link to relevant post/posts or atleast give me the post number/numbers since I can't be arsed to go through the whole thread ?

If what you are postulating is indeed true then i seriously need to revise my understanding of India;s foreign relations.

And afghans hate pakistan for their own grievances,CAR states have their own apprehensions against Russia,Latin America has grievances against USA and the list goes on.The issue here is which state has more influence and that is certainly none other than India as far as Nepal is concerned.
Citizens of Nepal may feel anything but it doesn't cancel the fact that India has the most influence over their country kind of like how most countries' citizens, including pakistan will hate USA but can't do anything about the influence on their countries.

Precisely my point. The list goes on and it happens everywhere. The ONLY difference is, for example, if Mexico or Brazil have somehow hate towards the US, they have to live with us in the SAME geography. But if say there was another country like the US (for example, say Canada), then they will lean towards Canadan, if the Canadians were to exploit that issue. Similarly, the Chinese are actually exploiting that issue a LOT!! So today or tomorrow, Nepal (only left without tremendous Chinese influence), will go toward the Chinese. Remember, if you are scared of a Bear, a massive Dragon may be your best friend against that Bear. Simple survival 101.

By the way, just to remain focused on the topic and stay productive, the topic in hand wasn't how much anyone hates Pakistan, Saudi Arabia or the US......we are SPECIFICALLY talking about SAARC and the Indian situation in the context of the first post on this topic. Let's not bring additional crap to deviate from the topic. I don't know what it is with you guys from India, the second you bring up something, you guys get so defensive that its hard to have a productive discussion.

I have a few good friends from Nepal. Their father and others served in the British Army under the Gorkha regiment. I've learned from them all about Nepal (multiple people, not just one household). I also have an employee who left recently but he was from Nepal. Plus, I travel myself too so I am not oblivious to the fact....

Precisely the reason why I concentrated on the dynamics on a country to country basis and not country to people basis.I didn't bring in the people's perception issue.
I hardly care for Indians if that is what you mean to say.
Your original statement was that Nepal has more strategic ties with Pakistan than India which is blatantly incorrect. As far as Nepal's future leanings are considered,it will most likely do a myanmar,i.e,get out of India's dominance and welcome China, especially its maoists but balance the relations, playing off both and angering none and trying to profit as much as possible from the competition between India and China.Indian hold over Nepal is far too strong and both are too integrated and invested in each other, for it extends not just to hard power but the soft power side as well, with Indians and nepalis sharing striking similarities in almost every way.

What you say about Nepal joining China in a sort of alliance against India is rather, strangely, true for the Bhutanese. For Bhutan is a nation still isolated from India though India has unprecedented hold over it.It's society most importantly is isolated from India and has certain grievances and reservations against Indians.Additionally,it has more in common with it's neighbouring tibetan buddhist ethnicities and China. If China can resolve its border issues with Bhutan in a manner that Bhutan finds favourable,it may very well abandon India and replace it with China if China is willing to do so.

However, all said and done. This still does not explain your statement that Pakistan has stronger strategic ties with Nepal than the latter enjoys with India. You have brought in China which is rather irrelevant as the thread is about SAARC and not east asia, even though China is a player.

Regardless of whether some in Nepal hate India or not, Nepal has strategic relations with India, the likes of which it will not have with Pakistan.
Your statement that Nepal tends to have better strategic ties with Pakistan is incorrect. Similar to the rest of your post in your analysis of the SAARC relations.

Bangladesh, Nepal and Bhutan are strongly and firmly in the Indian camp. To think otherwise is being wishful instead of being objective.

And watch very carefully how slowly Pakistan keeps losing influence in Lanka. Pakistan has already steadily kept losing influence in Sri Lanka from the time the civil war ended. It would not be long before it comes a non-entity there.
