How was it a strategic mistake? They were in a war zone, and guess what happens in a war zone: people die. Look what IRI has done to Syrian people.
All this bluster about revenge, asymmetric this or that is just huff-and-puff. IRI is not about to escalate anything specially now that US is most likely to exit the N deal and impose additional sanctions. All of this propaganda is for internal consumption. IRI has no capabilities to escalate.

The issue here is that Iran will not relent. If the West has made it an existential issue for IRI regime, then Iran is merely reciprocating that narrative. Syria, Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen are Iranian satellites now. So what will the West do, or can do about it other than knee jerk aerial attacks off and on? at the end of the day, Iran occupies these territories.
