If India is on the verge of acquiring fifth-generation fighter aircraft, can Pakistan be far behind? With the decks cleared for the Indian Air Force (IAF) to co-produce 127 PAK-FA stealth fighters with Russia for 25 billion dollars, Islamabad has also declared its intention to catch up.

In December 2015, Pakistan Air Force Chief Sohail Aman had said that Pakistan was negotiating with Lockheed Martin of the US, exploring options to buy the F-35 stealth fighter. A week later, however, the Air Force Chief denied he was talking to Lockheed, exposing Pakistan’s limitations in acquiring advanced military technologies from the West.


The newest version of the J-31 - now renamed the FC-31 Gyrfalcon - took to the air for the first time Friday, the China Daily reported.

The so-called "fifth-generation" twin-engine jet is China's answer to the US F-35, the world's most technically advanced fighter.

The new FC-31 has "better stealth capabilities, improved electronic equipment and a larger payload capacity" than the previous version which debuted in October 2012, the newspaper said, quoting aviation expert Wu Peixin.

"Changes were made to the airframe, wings and vertical tails which make it leaner, lighter and more manoeuvrable," Wu told the paper.

PAF must get FC-31 by 2025 in a total nuber of 56. These will give us the best possible counter of rafale ,MKI and S-400 . When we talk about 4.5++ then the options available dont satisfy the above 3 factors altogether (RAFALE,MKI,S-400) . Rafale has very low RCS , lower than typhoon and SU-35/J-11D . So in bvr , RAFALE WOULD HAVE much edge over any avalable option . FC-31 has less RCS than any any fighter india intend to get . And it is a matter of time that by 2025-26 india will start recieving PAK-FA(FGFA) as the project is is boosted again now 2 months again. S-400 is a threat to 4.5++ platforms but less threat to 5th gen platform. We have only FC-31 as option by 2025 so we must get 3 squadrons . Seconf point i that we must also participate in TFX programs , remember that TFX has 3 versions , twin engine , delta and single . ACM's words that we must do effort ourselves so by participating in TFX , our enigneers will get to learn very much plus we will have production license and facility of TFX at home so we can also make good business. TFX sngle engine must be the focus of PAF to make in home and start replacing every F-16 and by 2040 we will have a fleet of 110 TFX , 56 FC-31 , 250 THUNDERS.

IMO the FC31 is on the way, PAF is playing coy but they have the inside track on the bird, and are mightily impressed.

Initially will be purchased outright, but PAF are looking for indigenously manufacturing it.

FC-31 is a good choice for Pakistan AF.
As I know, there is only 3 countries, USA, Russia and China can develop 5th stealth fighters now. Japan, India, South Korea, ... just write PPTs.

PAF will have chance to exercise with Su35 soon as the the first batch of 4 units had been delivered to China on 25th December.
