This is cruelty, gross mismanagement, it should be stopped immediately

In 2022, 189,000 employees of WAPDA -affiliated government institutions used electricity worth Rs. 8.19 billion for free.

In the last 15 months of the PDM government, electricity worth 500 billion rupees has been stolen.

Action against 743 employees and officers involved in electricity theft...

300 units on 16th scale
450 units on 17th grade
600 units on 18th grade
880 units to 19th grade
1100 units on 20th and 1300 units on 21st and 22nd grade, are given free of charge.

Retired officers in these pay scales are provided with half units of present service.

What is the story behind this sudden spike in electric bills? Inflation has been running steady for over 12 months at 30 - 40% p.a. That can't suddenly make situation so dire that people are killing themselves over electric bill. Did the new government suddenly withdraw some subsidies or increase prices?

I am wondering the same thing? What has so radically changed ?!

A jump in tariff by NEPRA post IMF deal, by Rs 4.96/Kwh in July. Bills come at end of month, so I guess the outcry has started in August.

There will be more outcry though I guess, given below news. Additional 2.07 rupee hike over the above. Bills will come about in Sept if passed.

If am not wrong for a common man, till certain point or units power tariff is zero or nominal. Maybe the quietly transferred all the charges to Awaam, but only some one locally can confirm this.

Overall Pakistani Electricity production costs, are very high. Share of different sources is given in second link above, and lot of them are very costly.

People were already seething with anger, for obvious reasons.

These inflated electricity bills are just the Tipping point.

OK, take a middle-class household consuming 300 kWh, An increase of 1,500 rupees or 2,000 rupees per month will drive them to death? If they turn off the lamps for an extra hour per day, they may keep the bill same or replace some incandescent bulbs with LED or CFL bulbs to drastically lower the bills. The well to do can install solar panels on roofs to get rid of bills altogether. I can't understand this utter dejection over a 5-to-7-rupee price increase.

. .
This is all due to expensive powerstation deals signed by ppp and pmln which we are now reaping .

When Indian posters warned against these "CPEC gamechanger" projects they were ALL ridiculed and ascribed it to unbridled envy.
Today Pakistanis happily chomping at their 5th MacDonald's safely lounging in foreign lands are egging the poor to go shoot a General.
The price a poor man would pay in shooting generals would bring death and dishonour to his wife brother father sons and daughters, a price so easily paid from the comfort of an airconditioned house in suburban Britain or the sunny climes of California.

.
The question is why a low income daily labor who does dish washing for a living is using so much electricity?

I don't think the entire picture is being presented, something is missing. I agree with what you said.

Maybe someone who knows local situation can explain this outcry and deaths as well, which are sad.

I wonder why these claims do not match the situation on the ground.

But God forbid if you even dare to question CPEC outcomes in the country. This is HOLY work.

USA should be bashed at each and every opportunity instead - this will serve Pakistan well in the long term. Americans lie and talk nonsense all the time - US has not transformed human lives, Pakistan has. The world should look up to Pakistan for guidance and wisdom in terms of how to develop the country.

Chinese investments in Pakistan would be well-intentioned and welcome. But Khooni Nooni are desperate to show big projects to the masses - I do not expect from Khooni Nooni to approve projects that are in the best interests of the country.

Sorry but ur khaki creatures were also at the forefront (and their fanbois still are) of this "game changer" project.
