I 16pc GST imposed on 42 services in Islamabad Capital Territory

Islamabad - The government has imposed 16 per cent general sales tax (GST) on 42 services in Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) in order to align the taxation regime on services with that is being followed by the provinces.
The imposition of the tax would result in increase in charges provided by different servicemen in the city, as they would pass on the effect of tax to the consumers.
The government in budget introduced heavy taxation measures worth Rs 253 billion, which would lead to increase inflation rate in the country.
The services provided or rendered by hotels, motels, guesthouses, marriage halls and lawns, courier services and cargo services by road provided by courier companies, construction service, services provided by property developers and promoters, services provided for personal care by beauty parlours, clinics and slimming clinics, body massage centres, pedicure centres, management consultancy services, services provided by software or IT-based system development consultants, services provided by technical, scientific and engineering consultants, services provided by tour operators and travel agents including all their allied services or facilities (other than Hajj and Umrah), services provided by security agencies, services provided by advertising agents, services provided by fashion designers, services provided by architects and services provided in respect of rent-a-car.
The government imposed GST on services provided by specialised workshops or undertakings (auto-workshops; workshops for industrial machinery, construction and earth-moving machinery or other special purpose machinery etc; workshops for electric or electronic equipments or appliances etc.
including computer hardware; car washing or similar service stations and other workshops).
Services provided for specified purposes including fumigation services, maintenance and repair (including building and equipment maintenance and repair including after sale services) or cleaning services, janitorial services, dredging or de-silting services and other similar services etc.
Similarly, the government decided to levy tax on services provided by underwriters, indenters, commission agents including brokers (other than stock) and auctioneers.
It also included services provided by laboratories other than services relating to pathological or diagnostic tests for patients.
It also imposed tax on Services provided by health clubs, gyms, physical fitness centres, indoor sports and games centres and body or sauna massage centres.
The GST is also imposed on services provided by laundries and dry cleaners and services provided by cable TV operators.
The government also imposed GST on services provided by property dealers and retailers.
Similarly, the government imposed GST on call centres and services provided by car/automobile dealers.
Services provided in respect of mining of minerals, oil & gas including related surveys and allied activities, exhibition or convention services, valuation services (including competency and eligibility testing services), commissioning and installation service also came under tax net.
The GST has also been imposed on services provided by inland port operators (including airports and dry ports) and allied services provided at ports and services provided by terminal operators including services in respect of public bonded warehouses, excluding the amounts received by way of fee under any law or by-law.
