Bangladesh is the 14th most corrupt country in the world, said Corruption Perceptions Index 2014 of Transparency International on Wednesday.

Last year, the country was 16th in the table, which means the situation has worsened.

In the index, Somalia is the most corrupted country while Denmark is the lowest in corruption ranking.

Most of the countries ranked lower than Bangladesh are going through either civil war or suffer from International sanctions.

Government control over law and order is believed to be the primary reason for such downfall.

The Berlin-based group's table is the most widely used gauge of corruption by governments, police, court systems, political parties and bureaucracies, a scourge it says undermines development and deepens poverty.

2014 Corruption Perceptions Index -- Results

NOTE: The rankings are done as least corrupt countries, we are in tie with several nations and several others are also in tie with each other at different positions, thus we are ranked as 145/175 but in reality are 14th.

Bangladesh is not a land locked country ... it has lots of potential to move forward if its neighbor wont interfere in the matters of bangldesh ... we would progress in a rapid phase than .

Ahh c'mon where is the fun in non-interference, we Indians are trying to get our hands on every corner of Bangaldesh!

Higly doubt that, Iran has a higher ranking than us, so has Saudi Arabia and both UAE and Qatar have one of the highest rankings.

Also, Hasina has full control over the Judiciary system, one of the prime incentives for her party members to commit corruption.

Well but our lovely neighbour India loves to interfere into our politics. I fear Hasina will have the same faith as her father and brothers who thought the people of Bangladesh owe them everything.

Well buddy Iran has got Oil , UAE SAUDIA HAS GOT OIL and any body has got oil they are rich ... so we cant compare our self with them .... they are of course richer than us... the only problem as i said is the influence of the neighbour countries in our country if that would stop we would proceed with rapid phase that is for sure ....
Plus Bangladesh industry is also very good and growing day by day ..so there are good signs .. we need to improve our defence as well ..

Ha compared to Cortana I'm nothing but a newbie in trolling..btw according to the same list India does pretty well..even better than China..India comes in at a pretty respectable number 85. Even i admit we Indians could learn a trick from the they way Bangladeshis have done on some social indicators such as child malnutrition but it seems that in this case Bangladeshis could learn from us..who would believe! Why do you guys think that India is perceived as so much of a cleaner country than Bangladesh when it comes to corruption?

Oil has nothing to do with corruption, proper maintenance of Government offices do.

For the love of God, we aren't talking about India but Bangladesh. You want to talk about Indian corruption and discuss the topic with me, open a thread in the Indian forum and tag me and whoever you want.

Excluding tiny Bhutan, India along with Srilanka are the cleanest countries in South Asia region! Good going India!
What is the day to day situation on the ground in Bangladesh with regards to corruption, does it really affect the common folk or is it more of a high level thing?

True i agree with you .. than we need to improve our organization and build a strong anti corruption organizations as well . to counter this ... only punishment would do the job .. may be hand few of them on public places so that they others would know about the severity of the crime what do you suggest ??
