2.3m Covid vaccination jabs administered in a week:

• Says 332,877 people were administered Covid vaccine per day
• At least 37 deaths and 1,050 new cases of coronavirus reported in the last 24 hours across the country

(Karachi) Planning Minister Asad Umar has said that 2.3 million Covid vaccinations were carried out from June 12 to 18, which is the highest in any week so far.

In a tweet on Sunday, Umar said: "More than 23 lakh vaccinations were done at a rate of 332,877 per day. This is the highest so far in any week."


He added, "With 1.5 million vaccines arriving today and another almost 5 million in next 10 days, inshallah next week will be a new record." He remarked, "Well done Pakistan."

Meanwhile, at least 37 deaths and 1,050 new cases of coronavirus were reported in the last 24 hours across the country, which brings the total number of people who have tested positive for the virus since the start of the pandemic to 948,268, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) reported.


The death toll has reached 21,977 while the country's Covid positivity rate is 2.55 percent. The total number of critically ill patients is 2,296.

As many as 41,065 tests were conducted across the country in the last 24 hours. At least 1,282 people recovered from the deadly disease while 73,087 people have been fully vaccinated during the said period.

In wake of rising Covid cases, the NCOC issued new guidelines to curb the spread of the virus. The forum decided to implement broader lockdowns and restrict the movement of people. It banned all indoor and outdoor activities, including social, cultural, political, sports, and other miscellaneous events.

On June 7, the NCOC eased lockdown restrictions and allowed the opening of restaurants for outdoor dining. The government also reopened schools in areas with a low positivity ratio of Covid cases.

However, the NCOC said that academic activities will remain suspended in districts where the coronavirus positivity rate is still high.

Similarly, the NCOC decided to initiate a vaccination campaign on a massive scale under the "whole of the nation approach" in collaboration with various public and private partners.

The NCOC had set a target to vaccinate 70 million people by the end of this year. Planning Minister Asad Umar said that the acceleration of the vaccination drive in the country was made possible by the huge investment by the federal government.

He added that the government will spend much more next year on the procurement of vaccines.

The recent wave and the vaccination numbers would suggest that the citizens would take care to avoid crowds and maintain social distancing.
However, Karachiites seemed to have completely ignored the government's call for maintaining precautions, even while being immunised.
Videos on social media of citizens, who thronged the beaches of Karachi on Sunday, are nothing short of horrifying.




People had likely flocked to the beach to beat the intense heatwave. Temperatures regularly hover around 40 degrees and the humidity only exacerbates the situation.
However, one must question whether temporary relief is worth it if it can spark the fourth coronavirus wave.

Qatar pledges one million Covid-19 vaccine doses to Pakistan

The Qatar ambassador also applauded the Pakistan efforts in containing the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Qatar's ambassador to Pakistan, Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Faisel Al Thani, has said that his country will provide one million Covid-19 vaccine doses to Pakistan.

He made this statement during a meeting with National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser on Monday in Islamabad, according to a handout from the National Assembly Secretariat.

Minister Umar appreciates Chinese aid in help against pandemic

Pakistan has recently recovered from a serious third wave of infections and eased anti-epidemic restrictions nationwide after the COVID-19 positivity rate fell below 3 percent. Experts believe speeding up vaccine rollout and making sure people comply with health guidelines have helped the government succeed in curbing the spread of the virus.

The Asian country started its vaccination drive in February this year after receiving vaccines donated by China. With more donations from China as well as the Sinopharm, Sinovac and CanSino vaccines it purchased from China, Pakistan has been immunizing its population from the pandemic.

Asad Umar, head of the National Command and Operation Center (NCOC) against COVID-19, said China came for Pakistan’s rescue as a true friend when it was in dire need of the vaccine to immunize its public.

“We were facing a serious challenge and were looking for a friend to come to our rescue, and like always China helped us to overcome the crisis, enabling us to kick off our vaccination drive,” said Umar.

Apart from helping Pakistan with vaccine donations, China also enabled Pakistan to roll out locally produced CanSino vaccine through technology transfer, and to be self-sufficient of the vaccine in the future, Umar said.

With the technological support from the CanSino Biologics Inc., the National Institute of Health of Pakistan recently filled and packed the single-dose CanSino vaccine using the bulk vaccine purchased from China. It was the first COVID-19 vaccine manufactured by Pakistan.

Addressing the launching ceremony for the locally produced CanSino vaccine earlier this month, Umar shared results of a local survey, saying that Chinese vaccines are the preferred vaccines due to their superior quality and efficacy.

The vaccine is really a boon for people who have wide interaction with the public on a daily basis, and whose work or business was badly affected by the pandemic, such as transporters, teachers and traders.

M. Ali Kemal, an economic policy advisor at the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, said that the timely vaccination process supported by Chinese vaccines has helped in Pakistan’s economic recovery and boosted the government’s confidence in easing restrictions following a continuous drop in new cases.

He said that with the momentum in vaccination drive, the socio-economic activities in Pakistan will get a boost.

According to the NCOC, 100 million people out of Pakistan’s total population of over 220 million is eligible for vaccination, and the country aims to inoculate them by mid-2022. So far, there have been over 3.5 million fully vaccinated while over 7.2 million partially vaccinated.

Experts and officials believe that China’s vaccine donation and uninterrupted vaccine exports have greatly helped Pakistan and many other countries in their combating COVID-19.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health Faisal Sultan said that the vaccination drive in Pakistan centers around the Chinese vaccines.

He added that China’s help in the form of vaccine donations and supplies to countries in need especially the developing countries “underscores the philosophy which the Chinese government put forth, which is that China is doing it for a global good.”

Pakistan reports lowest number of Covid-related daily deaths since March 21

Karachi: Pakistan reported 20 deaths from coronavirus during the last 24 hours, which is the lowest number recorded since March 21, 2021.

For the past few days, Pakistan has been witnessing a downward trend in its daily deaths from Covid-19. Overall, the death toll has now reached 22,231. During the last 24 hours, the country conducted 44,496 tests, out of which 914 came out positive. So far, 14,460,890 tests have been conducted in Pakistan out of which 955,657 came out positive.

The country's positivity ratio stands at 2.05%, while there are 32,225 active and 1,961 critical cases. Meanwhile, 910 also recovered from the novel virus in 24 hours. With these new recoveries, the overall tally since the outbreak of the pandemic in the country has now reached 901,201.

Fourth wave of Covid-19 could emerge in Pakistan in July, warns Asad Umar

Moreover, the country has inoculated more than 14 million people against Covid-19. Last week, Minister for Planning Asad Umar warned that the fourth wave of the coronavirus could emerge in Pakistan in July if the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are not followed.

Pakistan to receive 2.5 million doses of Moderna vaccine from US

• Shipment to arrive as hundreds of overseas Pakistanis demand vaccines approved by Gulf, other countries

Karachi: The United States has announced that it will be shipping 2.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine to Pakistan.

This was announced by White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki on Monday.

"Thanks to the President’s commitment to playing a leading role in ending the pandemic everywhere, 2 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine will begin to ship to Peru from the United States, and 2.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine will ship to Pakistan," read a press briefing statement by Press Secretary Psaki.

The shipment of the Moderna vaccine to Pakistan comes amid protest by overseas Pakistanis who are stuck in the country as they have not been inoculated with vaccines approved by several countries.

Saudi Arabia and some other countries in the Middle East are not accepting certificates of the Chinese-manufactured Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccine.

Saudi Arabia has updated its travel restrictions, which includes requirements to take Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna and Johnson & Johnson in order to enter the kingdom, leaving out Sinopharm and Sinovac despite it being approved by the World

In Pakistan, most of the vaccines being administered are Chinese, preventing expats from leaving for their workplaces abroad. Overseas Pakistanis have been demanding that they should only be administered the Pfizer vaccine or the AstraZeneca.

On Monday, hundreds of desperate people overwhelmed a government-run coronavirus vaccination centre in the capital.

Most of those clamouring to be vaccinated were Pakistanis who work overseas, mainly in the Gulf, who need a shot of the hard-to-find AstraZeneca vaccine to travel there.

"We have a very limited capacity here, but for the past few days the centre has been overwhelmed by those wanting to travel abroad," senior police official Farooq Amjad Buttar told AFP.

Pakistan has so far fully or partially vaccinated nearly 12 million people from a population of 220 million, and mostly with the Chinese Sinopharm or Sinovac jabs.

Millions of Pakistanis work abroad, and their remittances are a key part of Pakistan's economy and its foreign currency reserves.

"It was not a protest or an attack," Buttar said, downplaying the incident in which no one was injured.

Muhammad Shehzad, travelled from Mardan to Islamabad in the hope of getting an AstraZeneca shot. "Saudi officials say they will let us enter only after getting vaccinated," he said
