KARACHI: The first patient of COVID-19, the mysterious viral pneumonia-like disease caused by the novel coronavirus, in Sindh has fully recovered, government officials said on Friday.
The patient, a young student from a town on the edge of Karachi, would be discharged from the hospital on Saturday as his third lab test for the novel coronavirus has come out negative, the officials said.
“The patient was in isolation and treatment for the past 10 days and was tested three times. The third test was done this (Friday) morning and it came out negative after which he was cleared by the authorities,” one official told The Express Tribune.
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, who was informed about the development in a meeting of coronavirus task force in Karachi, congratulated family of the COVID-19 patient and called it a great victory.
The young patient, who is believed to have contracted the virus in the Iranian holy city of Qum, was diagnosed on Feb 26 and subsequently shifted to the isolation ward of a private hospital. He had travelled to the Islamic Republic in a group of 28 pilgrims.
The family of the young patient – including his father, mother and sister – were immediately placed in quarantine, but were discharged after their lab tests for the novel coronavirus came out negative.
Coronavirus cases jump to six in Pakistan
Of the remaining two coronavirus patients in Sindh, the officials said one is recovering fast, while the other is also in a stable condition. Health authorities have advised the media against identifying the patients or sharing their personal details.
The development came a day after the state minister for health, Dr Zafar Mirza, confirmed a sixth case of the novel coronavirus, the mysterious virus which originated in a vet market of the central Chinese city of Wuhan and has since then spread to more than 90 countries of the world, killing over 3,400 and infecting over 100,000, mostly in China thus far.
But new outbreaks in Europe, the Middle East and in Asia have fanned fears of the contagion taking hold in poor nations that lack the healthcare infrastructure to cope.
There are growing fears in Pakistan — sandwiched between China and Iran, both hotspots for the disease — over how the country would deal with the outbreak.
Three of Pakistan’s confirmed coronavirus cases were in Karachi and the rest in Gilgit-Baltistan region – and all had a travel history to Iran where they are believed to have contracted the highly infectious disease.

Coronavirus: After 14 days, Pakistan opens Taftan border with Iran for trade
TAFTAN: Pakistan opened its Taftan border gate with Iran on Sunday for trade after two weeks of closure following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus that killed more than 100 in the neighbouring country.
A day after the first coronavirus patient recovered completely, Pakistan opened its Taftan border for trade with Iran and allowed trailers laden with goods to pass through the crossing.
Pakistan had closed its border with Iran on February 23 after the coronavirus situation deteriorated in the country. More than 120 people have been killed so far in the country and 4,500 have been affected by the pandemic. The infection spread from the wet markets of Wuhan and has spread to over 70 countries and affected more than 80,000 people worldwide.
A day earlier, Geo News had reported the number of people quarantined at Pakistan House in Taftan had overwhelmed the space's capacity with authorities shifting the pilgrims to another place.
Quoting Customs officials, the TV channel reported that more than 3,000 people were currently kept at two quarantine centres in Taftan.
Pakistan House at Taftan is filled, with over 2,500 people being kept thereafter screening at the border crossing.
Iran earlier had announced a surge in COVID-19 cases with 17 more deaths raising the total number of people killed to 124 as Tehran continues to grapple with the pandemic that has triggered panic across the globe.
Pakistani authorities, on the other hand, have stepped up efforts to contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country.
Screening machines have been installed and quarantine centres established at border outposts where pilgrims coming from Iran are kept before being allowed to enter the country.
Pakistan, Iran resolve to jointly tackle spread of virus
Islamabad and Tehran have agreed to work together to limit the coronavirus outbreak after nearly 3,000 people, including senior government functionaries, were confirmed to have contracted the virus in Iran.
The agreement over a joint response was reached during a telephonic conversation between Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi and his Iranian counterpart, Jawad Zarif.
Qureshi told Zarif that Pakistan extends its full support to Iran in coping with the virus.

The decision was taken during a meeting of the health department held on Tuesday morning under the chair of the Sindh minister for health. The meeting also recommended the setting up of a health desk at the airport.
With the help of the desk, all those entering Karachi through the airport will be screened for the coronavirus. A spokesperson for the health department said health desks will also be established at hospitals.
The desks at hospitals, named front-line desks, will provide up to date information about the spread of the virus in the city.
A recommendation to shut schools in the province for a longer period will also be sent to Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah.
A hospital in Gadap will treat those affected with the coronavirus, the spokesperson added.
A recommendation to cancel events like the PSL will also be forwarded to the government, the spokesperson affirmed.
PCB in contact with Sindh regarding PSL matches
A spokesperson of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) said Tuesday that the board was in contact with the Sindh government regarding the new advisory recommended by the health authorities and a proposal to ban public gatherings in Karachi.
“PCB officials are in constant touch with the Sindh government and attending all the meetings regarding PSL matches in the city,” the spokesperson said.
“Whatever the government recommends, the PCB will implement it.” Matches are scheduled to be held in Karachi from March 12.

KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has announced that the Pakistan Super League (PSL) season five matches will be hosted in Karachi as scheduled from March 12 amid fears of the spread of novel coronavirus in the city.
With the confirmation of two more cases of COVID-19, the mysterious viral pneumonia-like disease caused by the novel coronavirus, in Sindh, total number of patients has risen to 15 in the province out of 18 reported cases in the country.
Earlier in the day, it was reportedly suggested to Chief Minister Shah that a ban should be place on large public gatherings like the ongoing T20 tournament and to keep schools in the province shut down for a longer duration.
Two new coronavirus cases emerge in Sindh as Pakistan’s tally rises to 18
The chief minister, after chairing a high-level meeting at CM House on Tuesday, directed the health department to issue a health advisory to the spectators during the PSL matches and ensure installation of hand sanitizer stalls at National Stadium.
Furthermore, he directed Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah and Karachi Commissioner Iftikhar Shallwani to finalise details of health guidelines for the PSL matches with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).
He reiterated that all patients who have tested positive of coronavirus had arrived from other countries and there had been no human-contact cases observed in the city so far.
CM Shah urged the public to “have confidence in the government”.

Earlier in the day, Nasir Hussain Shah had told the media that adequate measures had been taken in order to conduct the matches in a safe environment.
“The PSL matches will continue as scheduled. Our preparations are complete. We are ready as far as health preparations are concerned. Fumigation will take place in and around the stadium. We would advise caution for foreigners. The virus is not very dangerous. It is the fans decision if they want to come to the ground. We will also conduct thermal screening,” Shah said.
PCB’s Director International Cricket Operations Zakir Khan had also said that a final decision will be made based on the recommendations of the officials in the Sindh government.

Schools to reopen on March 16, says education secretary
School Education and Literacy Department secretary Khalid Hyder Shah on Tuesday dismissed rumors that the provincial government was mulling plans to extend the school holidays across the province after nine more coronavirus cases were reported in the province.
In his video message, the secretary said that educational institutes across the province would reopen on March 16 and all academic activities would take place as per schedule.
Earlier in the day, it had been reported that the health department would send a recommendation to Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to keep the schools shut for a longer period.
Clarifying the education department’s position about the news, in which some TV channels had claimed that the Sindh government was considering a one-month extension of the closure of educational institutions, Secretary Shah said that after the emergence of new coronavirus cases in the province, the education department had received no suggestion from the health department to keep the educational institutes closed. This is why, the schools would be functioning on March 16 as per the schedule, he added.
On the other hand, the health department held a meeting on Tuesday morning under the chair of the health minister. Over the course of the meeting, the setting up of a health desk at the airport was recommended.
With the help of the desk, all those entering Karachi through the airport will be screened for coronavirus. A spokesperson for the health department said health desks would also be established at hospitals. The desks at the hospitals, which will named ‘front-line desks’, will provide up latest information about the spread of the virus in Karachi. A hospital in Gadap will treat those affected by the coronavirus, the spokesperson added.
Meanwhile, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, adviser on law and environment, also denied a report circulating on social media that the educational institutions would remain closed for a month as a result of the spread of coronavirus.
Talking to Geo News, he said that there was no truth in the report that the educational institutions would be remain closed for a month.
He said that the chief minister was holding a meeting on coronavirus on a daily basis, and the health minister also informed the chief minister of the preventive measures being taken by the provincial government.
He said a patient had been discharged from a hospital, which was a positive sign for all of us. Earlier, On March 1, when fresh cases of coronavirus emerged, the Sindh government had decided to keep the public and private schools, colleges and universities closed till March 13.

KARACHI: Chinese Consul General in Karachi, Li Bijian, on Wednesday advised authorities in Sindh to extend the closure of schools and end big gatherings in the city after a spike in coronavirus cases.
“The local Government of Sindh shall be advised to take more strong preventive measures including calling off big gatherings and extension of the closing of the schools to save more lives,” said Li in a tweet on Wednesday.

The diplomat urged the Sindh government to take the action as the spread of the virus was quick and actual.
Karachi has been the worst affected city so far, with 15 of the total 20 confirmed cases.

Many people in Karachi are confused about the coronavirus test, its cost and the criteria required to test a person.
The Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi released a statement about the test on Wednesday, which was shared with SAMAA Digital.
It reads: “COVID-19 screening is being offered at the Community Health Centre of the Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi. This is conducted by a physician for Rs1,050. If a patient meets the criteria for lab testing it is offered for Rs7,900.”
This means if someone has a fever or cold with a history of travel to a country where there’s an outbreak of COVID-19, particularly China, Italy, Iran or Afghanistan, in the last 14 days or has been in contact with a known patient they will be tested.
AKUH adds that lab tests are done free-of-cost based on a referral letter from the government.

Many people in Karachi are confused about the coronavirus test, its cost and the criteria required to test a person.
The Aga Khan University Hospital in Karachi released a statement about the test on Wednesday, which was shared with SAMAA Digital.
It reads: “COVID-19 screening is being offered at the Community Health Centre of the Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi. This is conducted by a physician for Rs1,050. If a patient meets the criteria for lab testing it is offered for Rs7,900.”
This means if someone has a fever or cold with a history of travel to a country where there’s an outbreak of COVID-19, particularly China, Italy, Iran or Afghanistan, in the last 14 days or has been in contact with a known patient they will be tested.
AKUH adds that lab tests are done free-of-cost based on a referral letter from the government.

They have sent 1000s of test kits free for now. We have 20 cases so it's enough .. For now
