Construction of tunnel under Karnaphuli to start by July 2013: Quader

CHITTAGONG, Nov 6, 2012 (BSS)- Communications Minister Obaidul Quader said here today that construction works on the proposed two kilometer long tunnel under the Karnaphuli river would begin by July 2013.
"A Chinese company in cooperation with local engineers has
already completed the feasibility study at a cost of Tk 12
crore", the communication Minister said this while talking to
newsmen after visiting the tunnel site and alignment near
Bangladesh Naval Academy gate at Patenga this morning.
The Minister said that the government has taken the
initiative to build the tunnel to reduce sufferings of the people
due to traffic jam and protect Chittagong port from siltation.
He said, another new commercial hub will be built on the
south side of the Karnaphuli river facilitating expansion of
trade and commerce as well as housing in the port city.
Obidul Quader said that if the tunnel is constructed, the
communication system in Cox's Bazar and Chittagong south
districts will get a new dimension paving way for the growth of
tourism industry and foreign investment.
He said the tunnel diagram will be submitted by the
architects by February next. The Communication Ministry will
organize two separate seminars on the tunnel issue in Chittagong
and Dhaka after receiving the tunnel map.
Nearly TK 6000 crore will be spent for the constructing the
tunnel under the Karnaphuli river, the Minister said.
Additional chief engineer of Roads and Highways, Junaid
Ahmed and Superintending Engineer M Ziauddin, high officials of
Bridge Division and local leaders of Awami league were, among
others, present during the Communication minister's visit.
