Now Orbiting Mars! After a 10-month, 442 million mile journey, our Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) arrived in Mars orbit late Sunday. It is the first spacecraft dedicated to exploring the upper atmosphere of Mars, answering important questions about the planet's history and climate. The mission helps pave the way for humans on our #JourneyToMars. #MAVEN

I really Wish india to acheive the same

.
I think MAVEN was launched a week after India launched her Mars Orbitor Mission. When did MAVEN overtake MOM? Very crucial phase for MOM as its slated to enter Mars Atmosphere now. Lets keep pur fingers crossed.

It is Nice to see wold's 2 largest democracy who are very advance in space are complementing each other in space.

Maven went straight for Mars. Indians did not have an engine with the requisite thrust to propel it directly out of the earth's orbit and fling it on course to mars, so the Indian scientists devised a very ingenious solution - they made the orbiter orbit the earth for about a month, doing seven orbit raising maneuvers to give it the sufficient escape velocity. That is why the American craft got there sooner. We had to spend a month increasing its velocity, because we lacked propulsion with enough thrust. If there is one thing our scientists (and everybody else) are good at, it is "jugaad"!

MAVEN had a more straight path to Mars where as MOM took several orbits of Earth to raise altitutude before trajectory to Mars

This is what I admire from Indian scientists - they don't let little things like funding get in the way. They try to find ingenious solutions around those problems. But then I look at GoI procurement, then look at ISRO. It is like night and day.

Yes, that has been the story for a long time. I guess the difference is that ISRO is run by scientists and engineers, while govt procurements are handled by bureaucrats.

The total money we spent to put a probe in orbit around Mars, is far less than the money spent by hollywood to make the film 'Gravity'.8-)

Thank you guys for the well wishes. I hope that MOM will successfully complete its mission.
