Congress leader AK Antony questions party's minority appeasement stand

Senior Congress leader AK Antony has hit out at the party leadership in Kerala for appeasing minorities for political gains. He said that the voters are worried whether the Congress can actually deliver social justice and equality when it indulges in minority appeasement.

He added that such an image of the party in Kerala was leading to a rise in communal parties and groups in the state.

Antony said people's faith in the party's commitment to secularism appeared to have "eroded slightly" and it was vital to regain the confidence of the masses to move forward. Antony said this on Friday while addressing a meeting held at the KPCC headquarters in honour of late Congress stalwart CK Govindan Nair.

"There appears to be a slight erosion in people's faith in secularism of the Congress. This has to be examined. It is vital for the party to regain the faith of the people to move forward," he said.

"There appear to be doubts in the minds of some people that while professing and practising secularism, the party has some slants... that all sections of people do not receive equal justice. This has to be removed," he said. Antony also expressed concern at the "growing influence of communal forces" even in Kerala, where secularism had struck strong roots.

The meeting was organised in honour of CK Govindan Nair, freedom fihgter and former KPCC president who played a central role in Kerala politics during the 1950s. Senior party leaders and functionaries including KPCC president V M Sudheeran recalled the services rendered by Nair.

Reacting to his statement, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy said, "This secularism practise by Sonia Gandhi is just bogus, it's just anti-Hindu secularism and people have rejected it. Antony has made a good suggestion now let's remodify it so that Hindus don't feel alienated by secularism, secularism shouldn't be taken as anti-Hinduism."

& come election time they will have the audacity to blame others for playing communal & caste politics. Fact of the matter is...Congress has already sown the seeds of polarisation based on caste & religion just before elections.

but didn't Indian constitution not allow religious base reservation, last time i heard the decision was struck down by supreme court

Parties like PFI and other terrorist mullah groups should be banned and their fundings from middle east should be checked. If any saffron party transforms Kerala into a developed state with good jobs, industries, roads, public health and transport facilities, no one will have any monetary reason to divide and rule.

Well Kerala is one of the most developed state in India (when compared) There is not much BJP can do in kerala.... Yes if they could bring some industries that would be good.... But the problem is the trade unions, for which BJP cannot do anything....
