This should not have happened at all. The focus and attention of the government should be poverty alleviation. Yes we need these events. But we need to pull our millions out of poverty also. The two are not mutually exclusive.

An excellent opportunity to develop the suburbs and slums was wasted by the government, which believed in putting up cosmetic steps instead on steps which would have been beneficial to the city.

After the games its back to square one or even worse for these commoners.

If you are so much thinking about this, I see your country have lot of homeless people, why not give it to them. It will actually help you to achieve your motto.

1. if such a huge number of people were illegally occupying prime land in Capital of India then what was the government doing uptill now?


2. If Indian Govt can make them evict the property for CWGs then why it was failed to do so.

3. The preparations for CWGs took years so had Indian Govt planned rehabilitation of these homeless Indians or not?

4. providing shelter to these people is not the responsibility of govt or not?

NEW DELHI: Even as the nation applauds India's winning spree in the Commonwealth Games being held in the Capital, a study by Housing and Land Rights Network says that human rights violations of the city's working poor, including the homeless, beggars, street vendors, and construction workers in the name of the Games cannot be forgotten.

According to HLRN, forced eviction and demolition of thousands of Delhi residents' homes took place for reasons like constructing stadiums, building parking lots, widening roads, city ‘beautification,' and clearing of streets on grounds of ‘security'.

The study focussed on forced evictions carried out in Delhi because of the Games and found that at least 2,50,000 people in the city lost their homes as a direct result of the Games since 2004. The preliminary findings of the ongoing study suggest that the due process for demolition of homes in various parts of the city was not followed, in addition to police presence and use of force, injury and adverse health effects, loss and destruction of possessions, adverse effects on children, death, loss of livelihood and income and no compensation or resettlement offered to the evictees.

1. New World class air port construction - Eviction ZERO - land belongs to air port for decades

2. Jawahar Lal Nehru st. - It was there for almost 30 yrs - eviction ZERO

3. Other stadiums - Just renovated - Eviction ZERO

4. Delhi Metro -started earlier than CWG awarded - Mostly constructed middle of road - eviction ALMOST ZERO, all affected persons handsomely paid based on mkt value of real state

5. Roads - Mostly relaid , except new ring road bypass - constructed along Yamuna river bank eviction ZERO

6. Last - CWG village - constructed on riverbed ...Eviction ZERO

It's apparent that all what you've posted in utter bull$hit. Pls. do post some new with data to support and I dare you to highlight where and how many people were evicted .

If even a portion of the artcle is true, I condemn the act of the Chinese Govt. My original comment was general in naure. Poor folks regardless of nationality bears the brunt of this kind of displacement.

Most likely factors were laziness, indifference, and apathy.

A simple analogy would be a really messy room with clothes lying all over the place and everything out of order. You know that you will have guests over the weekend yet you keep reminding your self that you will clean tomorrow but tomorrow never come . Until the last moment, with no time left, last ditch effort, everything is dumped in the closet. The room's clean but you still have to deal with stuff in the closet after the quests leave . However, next day same old story, closet's in a chaos and so is your room again.

No offense to anyone... but in general, especially in developing countries there is no value for the life of a poor.
