Combating extremism: moderate clerics from Pakistan to assist British imams

LONDON (April 14 2008): British government plans to bring over moderate clerics from Pakistan to assist British imams in combating extremism in their communities, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told a Sunday newspaper. "The vast majority of British Muslims have a Pakistani heritage. If we work with the government there we can win the arguments," said Smith, who visited Pakistan this month.

She said British police and security agencies are keeping tabs on 30 terror plots, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith told a Sunday newspaper. "There are 22,000 individuals who are being monitored. There are 200 networks involved and 30 active plots," Smith said in an interview with the News of the World. "We now face a threat level that is severe. It's actually growing," said the interior minister.

Smith said the level of threat showed why the British government is seeking legislation to extend the detention of terror suspects to 42 days from the current 28-day limit.

The measure faces strong opposition in parliament from the opposition Conservatives and Liberal Democrats as well as rebel lawmakers from the ruling Labour party. "We task the police and the security agencies with protecting us. Frankly, if they say to me it's getting more difficult and we need more time to investigate thoroughly, it is my duty to provide them with the tools they need," Smith said. "We can't wait for an attack to succeed and then rush in new powers. We have got to stay ahead," he added.

"Because we now understand the scale of what is being plotted, the police have to step in earlier, which means they need more time to put evidence together." In 2005, four British suicide bombers killed 52 people on underground trains and a bus in London.

Other attacks have been foiled by police. Eight men are currently on trial in London accused of trying to blow up transatlantic jets using liquid explosives in 2006. "Since the beginning of 2007, there have been 57 people have been convicted on terrorist plots," said Smith.

"Nearly half of those pleaded guilty so this is not some figment of the imagination. It is a real risk and a real issue we need to respond to."

. . .
Solving this with "moderate" version won't work. Yet better to address the main reason of extremism:

1. Perpetual injustice
2. Rampant racism
3. Rampant Islamophobic due to communication breakdown
4. Unequality and lack of mutual understanding.

Actually the list is still going on at length, including backwardness and ignorance among Muslim communities; so solving it by "mutilating" it into moderation won't solve the problem.

We in Indonesia also did this by so-called "moderate" Muslim organization and they didn't react when Tony B-LIAR said that Indonesian was "voice of moderate Islam"...what the f**k was that? When this organization engaged in political party, they fought each other and showed its ugly side.

However da'wah must be going along but with better method...
