Painting a grim picture of India’s combat readiness, a Parliamentary panel on Monday dropped a bombshell by revealing that the force levels of the Indian Air Force are down to a mere 25 fighter squadrons. The IAF till recently had maintained it had 32-34 squadrons with about 18 planes each.

But the revelation by the standing committee on defence in a report tabled in Parliament indicates the IAF's traditional air superiority over Pakistan may have been severely diluted.

India requires 45 fighter squadrons to counter a “two-front collusive threat,” but the panel found that the air force has only 25 active fighter units.

"Moreover, 14 of these squadrons are equipped with MiG-21 and MiG – 27 which will retire between 2015- 2024. Thus the strength will be reduced to just 11 squadrons by 2024..our capability has already come down,” the panel said.

It flagged concerns about India’s depleting military capability in the context of tackling a two-front challenge – euphemism for a combined threat from China and Pakistan.

The committee slammed the government for its failure to modernise the armed forces and asked it to take prompt measures to plug crucial gaps.

The panel noted crippling deficiencies in military equipment was fast-eroding India’s capability vis-à-vis its neighbours. The reports enumerated challenges being faced by the military ranging from inadequate number of fighter planes to shortfall of warships, missiles, tanks and even bullet proof jackets.

The panel found the navy had inducted only one submarine during the last 15 years, while it had retired five. “It’s high time that adequate budgetary provisions are made so that deficiencies are mitigated and the country is capable to take on two front challenges,” the panel said.

The panel expressed deep concerns over “critical shortages” of artillery guns and missiles. Dubbing missiles a “very crucial component” in any modern force “with a high deterrent value”, the committee said missiles should be made available to the army in required quantity. The panel was perturbed to learn that bullet-proof vests had not been bought by the defence ministry, “jeopardizing the lives of thousands of soldiers.”

The panel was surprised to note that the government was raising a mountain strike corps but no separate allocation had been made for it. “An amount of Rs. 5000 crore has been earmarked for it but it is not over and above the actual budget allocated and the Army has been asked to raise this Corps out of its own budget,” it said.

. . .
This us the result of tying foreign arms purchase to TOT. Both should be mutually exclusive.

These are panic buttons being pressed right now by the IAF to force the MoD's hand in the MMRCA deal. It's one of the very few ways IAF has of shocking the government to action as far as the MMRCA deal is concerned; the downside being the government might actually put a deadline to Dassault and prepare to collapse the deal completely in favor of faster acquisition methods.

But the MMRCA aside, we'll probably see the number of MKIs being increased again now. to over 300. S. Jha has already alluded to such a possibility a month or so back.

300 su-30 mki are going to be very expensive to maintain mki is a huge aircraft
not to mention iaf has various types of aircraft mi-29, mig-27, mig 21, mirage 2000 and jaguars
6 different platforms non with common parts i assume

Sqdn strength is depletion is only for light weight Mig-21, so not to worry..the same is being replaced with Su-30s.

For few years there will be lesser number of fighters in IAF, but will be picked up after 10 years.

lol..typical pathetic junk indian military ....

25 squadrons for an air force of a nation of 1 billion plus people with land area of 3.5 million+ sq kilometers?

Very pathetic indeed. lolololol...

Its 25 combat squadron, with all required tech to counter any possible intruders, including BVRAAMs and HMS.
And not to mention ground based air defence systems.

.
Just 25 combat squadron????
Presently we have---
Su 30MKI-------11 combat squadron in service
Mig 29-----------03 combat squadron in service
Mirage 2000----03 combat squadron in service
Jaguars--------- 06 combat squadron in service
Mig 27----------- 05 combat squadron in service
Mig 21----------- 11 combat squadron in service

Total = 39 combat squadrons

Is author talking about any time available combat squadrons?? or total combat squadron in service??

As far as Parliamentary panel comments are concerned then they were talking about fighter aircrafts which excludes jaguars, Mirages and Mig 27.

As usual our so called defence experts are good at mixing things up to make it a bit spicy.

At any given point, Indian mki fleet is below 60% operational. And that's the most advance airplane they have.

Yes its around 60% and by some reports which was tabled in French Parliament Rafales is about 45%, F-22 availability is also around 55 %.

Thumb rule is that twin engine aircraft availability rate is always lower than single engine aircraft.

.
Relax take your time were engaged on the western border for another 2 years take your time to build up your airforce .oh and hows that TEJAS aircraft comingI I herd that blk 2 is stestealth.

.
To me it appear is wrongly reported or understood. Combat ready jets are always less the total strength. Repair/maintenance, ungradation reduces the combat ready jets numbers.

.
What a bunch of sensationalist hogwash. The IAF has around 20-22sq right NOW! operational with 4th gen+ fighters... with more coming online due to MKIs coming in. So the report is completely biased and essentially there to force an increase in defence budget.

.
what happen to additional mki ? ? we have been hearing this from a long time
