Cochin Shipyard launches 17th Aadesh-class patrol vessel

India's state-owned Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) has launched the 17th Aadesh-class fast patrol vessel on order for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), the company announced on 30 July.

The 50 m vessel was laid on 11 June and has been named ICGS Arush . CSL was awarded an INR15 billion (USD234 million) contract in 2010 to build 20 fast patrol vessels in an effort to bolster the ICG's maritime surveillance and constabulary capabilities.

According to IHS Jane's Fighting Ships , the Aadesh-class vessels are each armed with one 30 mm CRN-91 naval gun supported with an electro-optical fire control system supplied by Bharat Electronics as its main weapon and two 12.7 mm machine guns for point defence.

Hi
Sir can you shed some light on the construction of the Training vessel which was to be constructed for the coast guard? Is its construction started or not?

Thanks

Hey chanakya can you tell me how many OPV are there in ICG also this fast patrol vessel will not be able to fight in a war, won't it?

Indian Coast Guard has a total of 14 OPV's at present.

3 - 1800 tons Vishwast-class + 6 - 2300 tons Samar-class + 5 1220 tons Vikram-class which Vishwast-class are the newest one inducted in 2010 whereas Vikram-class was inducted in 1983 and Samar-class in 1996.

17 new OPV's will be inducted in the years to come namely GSL-class (6), Pipavav-class (4) & L&T-class (7). Three out of six GSL-class OPV's of 2400 tons have already been launched. All new OPV's will be of 2400 to 2500 tons range.

In modern naval warfare - The OPV's are the only Coast Gaurd Vessels that can be deployed in war after refitting them with arms and defensive measures. Patrol boats are only meant for coastal defence in peace times. Though in the end everything boils down to strategy - It is noteworthy that during the 1971 Indo-Pak naval war when Indian Navy launched naval offensive operations like Operation Trident and its follow-up Operation Python on Pakistan Navy (which are in fact considered the turning points of the naval war resulting to decisive Indian victory) - During those operations Indian navy used it's light Fast attack crafts - the Vidyut-class missile boats of 245 tons only - those missile boats were even smaller than these patrol vessels of 290 tons but they ended up sinking PN's minesweepers and other major vessels. You can't underestimate anything in times of war.
