According to a story, the Cobra's advantage in maneuverability over the Hind had been demonstrated in the early 1980s. A Soviet Hind based in East Germany was flying along the border with West Germany, playing "cat" to a US Army Cobra flying on the other side of the border in the role of "mouse". The Cobra pilot was a "real pro", and the Hind pilot lost control trying to follow his maneuvers. The Soviet gunship went into the ground, killing its crew.

I wonder how many hits does Hind can really take? I dont believe in two shots of missiles.

Hind is better then Cobra, but above scenario reflects all training of pilots. Hind can't chase Cobra.

Would someone define "better"?

In what aspect? helicopters don't do dogfights like fighters.

Are we talking about their respective ground support roles? their weaponry? their durability in taking hits? If so from what?

Let's make this a sensible thread.

It has a fully armoured cockpit but as to the transport cabin I'm not sure.

Some of the latest rotors like those on American UH60s can take hits from 23mm cannon fire and with upgrades I'd say the same is possible for the Hind.

The hind is heavier and can take more bullets, whereas the cobra is more agile. Both can destroy support infantry very well and act as gunships.

However, comparing the two against each other is not very fair, since they r both different helis meant for different purposes.

I don't understand how they are different both were made for anti infentry and anti tank and also both now with a few upgrades can take out slow and low flying aircrafts the only differenc I see is that the Hind can carry troops and the cobra cannot.

bad compare

should be Apche vs the Hind

No need to make posts like this. It adds no value, comparison with a little bit of detailed view would help. Also learn to spell "Apache" before you compare. Thanks!

One thing that I have heard with regards to the MI-24 is that it is not capable of hovering stationary and using its weapons...it requires straffing runs and is not as flexible as supposedly the Cobra in at least this role (Cobra can stay hovering at a standoff distance and use its weapons). Armament of the two is fairly comparable. Cobra due to its size is more nimble and also has provisions for AIM-9L sidewinders to take on approaching aircraft or other attack helicopters. Mi-24 can act as a troop carrier and Igla SAM has been integrated to it. The only time the Cobra has been able to transport men is when in Afghanistan, 2 USMC Cobras carried 4 USSF operators each on their base railings for a quick transport. Aside from that, Cobra is useless as a troop carrier.

Apache is more advanced than any Hind operating anywhere. It is in the class of Ka-50/52 generally speaking (I am sure LongBow has avionics that are more advanced than any of the Russian derivatives).

The Hind was designed to b an armoured heli carrying troops, with secondary AT and AP roles. However, in afghanistan it proved to be an excellent gun platform and took on the role of a gunship. But it wasnt designed for that purpose.

Now the Cobra was designed to be a gunship. As such, it would have better comabt capability compared to the hind.

not to mention the fact that the huge size of the hind would make easy target for SAMS like anza, stingers etc.

My dear friend cobra is a true gunship unlike hind.Cobra was made for the role. And hind its transport with an ability(attack)any ways its not a true gunship:cheers:
