Pakistan's army chief visits Beijing after 'Silk Road' tension

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Pakistan’s army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa began a three-day visit to China on Sunday, Pakistan’s military said, days after a Pakistani minister stirred unease about Chinese Silk Road projects in the South Asian nation.

Bajwa is the most senior Pakistani figure to visit staunch ally China since the new government of Prime Minister Imran Khan took office in August, and his trip comes a week after China’s top diplomat visited Islamabad.

Pakistan has deepened ties with China in recent years as relations with the United States have frayed.

Bajwa may be hoping in Beijing to smooth out any Chinese alarm at comments last week by Pakistan’s commerce minister, Abdul Razak Dawood, who suggested suspending for a year projects in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the Pakistan leg of China’s Belt and Road Initiative that includes recreating the old Silk Road trading route.

Bajwa, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), regularly holds meetings with world leaders due to the Pakistan armed forces’ outsize influence in the nuclear-armed nation, where the military controls security and dictates major foreign policy decisions.

“During the visit COAS will interact with various Chinese leaders including his counterpart,” Major General Asif Ghafoor, the military spokesman, tweeted late on Sunday.

Beijing has pledged to invest about $60 billion in Pakistan for infrastructure for the Belt and Road project.

Dawood, in an interview with the Financial Times, also suggested the CPEC contracts had been unfairly negotiated by the previous government and were too favorable to the Chinese. Later he said the comments were taken out of context, but did not dispute their veracity.

The critical comments were published just after China’s top diplomat, State Councillor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, visited Pakistan and the two sides reaffirmed the mutual benefits of the Beijing-funded projects.

On Thursday, Pakistan’s government said it wanted CPEC to include more projects with a focus on socio-economic development, something which would align more with the populist agenda of Khan’s new administration.

Well it is quite sudden that COAS suddenly went to China for Visit, not sure what it must be about other then
  • JF17 Block 3
  • Type 053 or Type054
Any SAM purchase on the cards?
My guess is the next Gen mbt and potentially the z10, I doubt it has anyrhing to do with navy or airforce, as we would have seen naval and air force officials go with him.

I also don't this visit is political or is about cpec

This is a military visit keep your political thoughts in siasat section bro. This visit is related to military.

will Idlib offensive also be discussed?

.
There are more serious and long lasting developments happening that affect our interests besides CPEC which is progressing as per plans and buying some military hardware. Every visit by COAS is not a shopping trip.

There are serious things happening in this area. US India alliance is taking a new shape, new developments in Afghanistan, new policy by new Pakistan government.

We are not sitting idle either, we have our own interests and we are going to protect them one way or the other and we have allies in the area who have similar concerns and are on the same page. We are making our own moves and need to bring our allies up to speed on recent happenings and our line of action.

.
You all got it wrong. Our COAS is only involved in the strategic arena as he is a spokesman for PA. The only thing that has changed is the situation in Afghanistan. The Taliban is making rapid gains and the fall of Kabul is close. Pakistan and China need to design a military doctrine to control, destabalise or support the outcome in Afghanistan. As the outcome is not favourable to the US then they may with their proxies the Indians retaliate for alleged Pakistani involvement. The PA must have some drift of something serious for such a high level military visit.

Idlib is not our issue. It is Syrian matter and they are a sovereign country.

You are correct here but we still don't know who is traveling along him.

COAS - Chief of ARMY Staff. Pak Army doesn't operate or purchase fighter jets or naval frigates.

The visit is more likely linked to regional security issues or CPEC security.

Still not our issue, and should never be. Idlib can be burning and millions dead- but all our response should be is humanitarian. Who is responsible and what side is extremely dangerous for Pakistan to decide whether we know or not.

We don't want to be accessories to genocide. What answers will we have for the next generation when they ask what did you do ?

I hope he discusses how China wants to do economic colonization.

Like it has done to sooooo many African vountries. We dont want to be Sri Lanka where we have to mortgage our land/our property for next 100 years.

Our memory is soo weak. Almost 200-300 years ago British didnt just show up and say to the Mughals "Hello may we please take over your country"

They said" Hi would you be interested in all these business deals which are too good to be true?? P.S just dont read the fine print where it says we can have a private army until our own government takes over our operations and shows its intentions of direct involvement".

This CPEC needs to be renegotiated. Fat corrupt political scum has sold the whole nation down the river.

It is a game changer only if we play the gane right.
