Prime Minister Imran Khan played down differences with longtime ally Saudi Arabia as Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa visited Riyadh, saying the two countries had no differences.

Gen Bajwa’s current visit is taking place at an important juncture. The United Arab Emirates had last week reached an agreement with Israel and the United States to normalise ties with the Jewish state. Reportedly more Arab countries would be joining the Emiratis in normalising ties with Israel.

Moreover, the army chief ’s visit is being viewed in the context of Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi’s criticism of the Saudi Arabia-dominated Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for not convening the meeting of its Council of Foreign Ministers on Kashmir. However, ISPR Director General Maj Gen Babar Iftikhar earlier said the visit had been planned long before the controversy erupted.

Gen Bajwa’s trip, analysts say, would also try to overcome the minor hiccup in ties caused by the foreign minister’s statement.

“The rumours that our relations with Saudi Arabia have soured are totally false,” the premier said in an interview with Dunya News on Tuesday night.

Army Chief Gen Bajwa travelled to Saudi Arabia on Monday for a one-day visit that was “primarily military-affairs oriented”, the army said.

“On the Kashmir issue, there is a view that OIC should have stepped forward,” Prime Minister Imran said.

“Saudi has its own foreign policy. We shouldn't think that because we want something Saudi will do just that,” he added.

Maj Gen Iftikhar had last Thursday, while responding to queries about Qureshi's remarks, said: “There is no need to raise questions about these (Pak-Saudi) ties.” He said there could be “no doubt about the centrality of KSA in Muslim world”.

Bajwa failed to take any sane advice and got snubbed by the Saudis.

Lets see our top official visits there country and only has an audience with their DEPUTY defence minister. A huge snub. I blame officials like him for the predicament where in to begin with. SMQ has guts to have spoken the truth for once.

What interests do we have in KSA other than the 2 holy mosques? KSA economic influence over Pakistan is far over exagerated to begin with. Sure we get remittance, but they benefit from cheap labour and domestic spending of the migrants who spend most of the money they make back into the Saudi Economy.

Our trade relations are minimal. We import far more from them. Military relations also favour them since we have gained nothing from the military support provided over the last few decades.

I say start isolating the saudis. The UAE, KSA, Gulf are facing an economic demise of epic proportions. Tourism and oil spending is wayyyy down and expected to remain that way. Their power base is very shaky thus there increasing reliance on the US/Israel. Those relationships are also on shaky grounds.

The last thing the Saudis will want is a Pakistan with its own interests in mind who stands upto ARAB aggression. Imagine Iran x 100 and you have Pakistan which can point its nukes at Riyadh or Dubai. Make these warnings and follow thru and see how these sheihks tremble. We will see how the US, Israel, or India helps them when Pakistan decides. No nation in the world would risk nuclear confrontation with a Rising Pakistan

No doubt Bajwa is a disgrace but the blame is on IK who gave him 3 years of extension. Justice Khosa can have his own prejudice but he was right against the Bajwa's extension.

Agree, Foreign Affairs is the job of the civilian government. There is absolutely NO JUSTIFICATION for a COAS to run to the Saudis like this and get snubbed and humiliated.

Riyadh: Army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa is welcomed by Saudi Arabia’s Deputy Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman. — Reuters

ISLAMABAD: Chief of the Army Staff Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa held talks with Saudi Deputy Minister for Defence Khalid bin Salman bin Abdulaziz on bilateral defence cooperation and regional security, said the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Tuesday.

“Matters of mutual interest including bilateral defence and security cooperation and regional security were discussed,” the Pakistan military’s media wing further said.

According to the Saudi Press Agency, the meeting was held on Monday.

The Saudi statement explained that besides the bilateral cooperation, talks were also held on enhancing cooperation for security and stability in the region. Without elaborating, it said issues of “common concern” were also discussed.

Tweeting after the meeting, Prince Khalid, who is Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s full younger brother, said: “Met today with my brother, H.E. General Qamar Bajwa, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff. We discussed bilateral relations, military cooperation, and our common vision for preserving regional security.”

Gen Bajwa had reached the kingdom for defence talks on Monday and met Chief of General Staff Gen Fayiadh bin Ha’med Al-Rowaily, and Commander of Joint Forces Lt Gen Fahad bin Turki Al Saud. Military ties were discussed during those meetings.

Gen Bajwa is being accompanied by Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) Director General Lt Gen Faiz Hameed during the visit, which is taking place amidst strain in bilateral ties caused after Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi complained about the Saudi-dominated Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) dragging its feet on Pakistani request for a meeting of its Council of Foreign Ministers on Kashmir.

Actually, the design of the Israeli flag is based on the traditional Jewish tallit that usually has blue or black stripes on its edges, so the two blue stripes don't represent the Nile and Euphrates. Even if they did represent those rivers, that hardly means Israel's foreign policy is to actually conquer the entire region. India's national anthem mentions Sindh, will you use that for your conspiracy theory that India's foreign policy is to conquer Sindh?
