Saddam and Assad were secular strongmen. They weren't nice people for sure, but they cracked down hard on religious extremism and terrorism.

But it seems that America would rather get rid of them, in favor of an alternative that is more palatable to them. I.e. Vast areas of the Middle East ruled a new country calling itself the Islamic State.

You might be right that Assad was anything but a kind politician, but there have been massive public gatherings of his supporters while the Syrian Civil War is in full swing, even in Western countries.

What kind of fcuked up mind twist is that? Russia respectively the former SU have been in Syria for decades and life was rather peaceful in that region until NATO started to bring democracy to Iraq and via al Nusra aka ISI to Syria.

What is your problem that Russia sells arms to a legitimate government? Maybe it's more palatable to you that NATO gives arms to a terrorist org such as al Nusra/ISIS.

The US was going to 'warn' the Israelis if they started deploying pilots to help Assad.

The fact of the matter is the US needs Russians in Syria to counter ISIS, because Assad is getting stretched thin. He's losing manpower and the ability to recruit fresh faces. Syrians have atleast 1 member of each family engaged in the Civil War, most have 2-3 members.

You don't need to worry about the 'moderate' Syrian Rebels being barrel-bombed by the Russians because they'll be carrying out strikes against ISIS, Al-Qaeda, and assorted affiliates leaving Assad to handle the rest.

A country controlled by ISIL is far better than a country controlled by Russia，For US of A，I thought everyone knows that.

Saddam was obviously not a saint.

But Saddam-led Iraq had ZERO active terrorist groups.

Now though, Iraq and Syria have been de facto partitioned. Vast swathes of their territory are now part of a new country, the Islamic State.

Assad is not a saint either, that's why the West helped all the anti-Assad forces. But guess who the anti-Assad forces turned out to be? AGAIN... ISIS and Al-Nusra (Al-Qaeda). Oh joy.

al qaeda HATED Saddam, they even issued a fatwa against him....he was no angel indeed, but then again the US invasion of Iraq sowed the seeds for chaos in the region. It'll go down in history as one of the greatest blunders made by a super power in world history

US and its regional minions have been actively supporting terrorist elements that fight the Syrian government. These elements might not be exactly ISIS at the time they receive training and finance from the US and others in the region, but, oftentimes, these groups in time either become another radical faction like J. al-Nusra or pledge allegiance to the IS.

The US cannot ask Russia to stop providing limited assistance to a legitimate government supported by the majority of its people while providing help for some 90.000 terrorists (a one third of whom are foreign Jihadist mercenaries) to destroy the Syrian nation into several small pieces.

If Assad is gone, Syria will be ten times Libya. In fact, is there a Libya anymore?
