U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton delivers her address at Anna Centenary Library in Chennai, India, Wednesday, July 20, 2011. Clinton on Wednesday challenged India to expand its traditional sphere of interest from South Asia to neighboring regions to compete with increasing Chinese assertiveness.

Clinton appealed for India to project its influence eastward, toward China’s backyard in Southeast Asia and the Pacific Rim, as well as boost engagement in Central Asia, on China’s western flank. She said the U.S. and India shared values that made them powerful partners in promoting security, democracy and development in areas into which China has made a push for dominance.

“Our interests align and our values converge,” she said in a speech in India’s southeastern port of Chennai, a fast-growing manufacturing hub chosen as the venue by U.S. officials who believe it is a natural jumping-off point for a greater Indian role in East Asia. With its democratic traditions, India can “inspire others to follow a similar path of openness and tolerance,” Clinton said.

“India’s leadership has the potential to positively shape the future of the Asia-Pacific,” she said. “We think that America and India share a fundamentally similar vision for the future of this region.”

Clinton announced that the Obama administration would soon launch a three-way dialogue with India and Japan, long America’s chief ally in countering Chinese ambitions.

In another bid to lure Indian eyes east, the administration has decided to invite India to participate as an observer, for the first time, in the annual Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation forum that the U.S. will host in Hawaii in November, according to American officials. Membership in the group is limited to nations and economies that border the Pacific Ocean, which India does not.

Clinton was careful not to specifically identify China as the target of the effort to court India as an Asia-Pacific power. But, her comments left little doubt about U.S. intentions.

She noted that China is a major player with which both the U.S. and India have differences. India and China are uneasy neighbors that fought a war in 1962, although there have been recent improvements in the relationship. Clinton stressed that cordial relations between India, China and the United States were important.

“This will not always be easy,” she said. But she added that “if we want to address, manage or solve some of the most pressing issues of the 21st century, India, China and the United States will have to coordinate our efforts.”

From Chennai, Clinton travels Thursday to Indonesia for a regional security conference, where she is expected to renew U.S. concerns about Chinese aggressiveness toward its neighbors, particularly in the South China Sea, where there are numerous territorial disputes.

Last year, Clinton raised Beijing’s ire by saying that maritime security in the South China Sea, over which China claims sovereignty, was a U.S. national security interest. She made the matter a central point of her participation in the East Asia Summit hosted by Vietnam.

Already post and that thread is running hot.

Why post the same thing again?

the media already drags india along whenever china is mentioned.

when u look at facts, china is decades ahead of india in pretty much every industry.

just because india has a billion people, people automatically drag india along in a china discussion.
india is close to china only in population.
in terms of development of a nation, india is not even in china's league.

Why resurrect a dead thread?

i knew clinton will talk more about china during her visit to india than india itself.
the west just uses india as a counterweight to china.
the west dont really care about india, they just use india as a puppet state to counter china.

even the british prime minister did this, they all know china is the main rival to the west so they are using india.

indians are buying the anti-chinese propaganda hook, line and sinker.
the west has convinced india that somehow india can match china one day in the future. but the reality is india is atleast 30-50 years behind china's development as a nation.

absolutely awesome:lol:
i fell from my bed after reading this..
on topic,i agree that there is difference b/w china and india for upto 10 years. We have difference of development structure in which you have achieved a lot but we have started in this.you have infrastructure ready,we are building.
anyway, you can write upto 500 years as difference.

and your point of india used by west is absolutely ridiculous, after china, only india is country which will put behind china in growth rates after 5-6 years.
They want to have pie in development of india.if u have little bit mind, then use it.
They could sell only armed weapons to india on the behalf of china if competition and putting india against china is main concern....but they think otherwise, they want to have pie in indian development in infrastructure, retail sector, banking sector...etc..now tell me where is china in this..

The media has already had the concensus to drag India along whenever China is mentioined.
The public like to draw India into the picture whenever Chinese story arise or vice versa is not because they want to but because of the recent years of media influence by the US media with the objective of creating a hostile environment for China among its neighbour (Vietnam/Philippine in recent case). Bravo, what a tactic! No wonder there are so many envious Indians towards China with unbalance mentality (i.e. hallucination all the time.. you should know what I mean). Those countries failed to see the history, too bad.

Errr....But what is China's "backyard" ?

The backyard of the house in which Hu Jintao lives ?

They are just in desperate denial and could not accept the changing reality of China's continuous rise that's having a global impact.

Watch them cry some more by 2015. ^^

very true.

western power is definitely waning after the global financial crisis and now the sovereign debt crisis.
china is rising very fast and this decade will cause the biggest global power shift in 500 years.

BS .

India is much behind China in many things particularly infrastructure but in terms of per capita income India is just about 10-20 years behind china that is it .

If one is to go by your statement then China would be 200 years behind USA , best of luck challenging USA then .

Other than that China has more income inequality than India , India is more equal than China in terms of Income distribution .

Stop vomiting . India is a rapidly growing economy of 1.2 billion people which will become the 3rd largest economy in the world in just another 15 years. That is why West gives India importance , China is just one of the many reasons .

It's funny how the Chinese members here speak of Chinese supremacy , Chinese century while they can't even display Chinese flags but while displaying US and Australian flags .
