Exaggerated and sensationalist nonsense.

As a Bangladeshi I have been observing all these "predictions" over the years and they were all exaggerated.

1. The report says 17% of the country "could" be flooded. Even if that did happen that portion of the population can move to other regions and cities as they are doing, i.e. the global pattern of rural to urban migration.

2. It is said that Bangladesh is actually expanding land wise due to geographical factors. 2050 is 37 years away, we have time to build a Holland-style system of dams and other things.

Bangladesh

I would like @UKBengali @iajdani @eastwatch to comment on this.

Yes, there will be some areas that may go to the sea permanently and/or be lost to the desalination but this is likely to be minor - around few percentage points of total BD land area.

The time scale being talked about is around 5 decades and that would allow BD to have ample time to build sea defences on the most vulnerable parts of the coastline. Holland manages perfectly well with a huge percentage of it's land below sea level and so will BD.

And more land is/will be created by the huge amounts of sedimentation that is being deposited from the Himalayas. With increasing wealth and technological capabilities of BD over the next decades, this land can eventually be turned to productive uses in one way or another.

Let some people rejoice in a "drowning" BD as that simply will not happen.

Yes.

Pakistan was affected by severe floods a few years ago and even just 5 months back.

The USA is also affected by natural disasters.

Hurricane Sandy unleashes chaos on America's east coast as storm surge brings devastating floods - Telegraph

This is why your post is very relevant as we live in an inter-connected world where actions in one place affect the rest of us.

Glad to see someone else share my point of view. Sadly, we southasians are stuck in the 19th centuray diplomacy and thinking; just wish some sane people come into the key positions for the good of all of us!
