The Arctic Ocean could become ice-free in the summer from as early as 2030 as a natural cycle in water temperature adds to man-made global warming, according to a new study.

Computer models currently expect the Arctic Ocean to be ice-free in the summer, more specifically in the month of September, between 2030 and 2050.

But a new study published late last month in the American Geophysical Union's (AGU) journal, Geophysical Research Letters, found that it is most likely to happen on the earlier end of the spectrum.

The acceleration is due to a natural cycle called the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) — long-term ocean surface temperature shifts in the Pacific of about 0.5 degree Celsius and lasting between 15 to 30 years.

Five years ago, the Pacific began to switch from the cold to the warm phase of the IPO.

The authors of the study plotted predictions of when an ice-free Arctic would occur in model experiments where the IPO was shifting in the same direction as the real world. These showed an earlier ice-free Arctic — by seven years on average — than those predictions that were out of step with reality.

"The trajectory is towards becoming ice-free in the summer but there is uncertainty as to when that's going to occur," James Screen from the University of Exeter in the UK and the study's lead author, said in a statement.

"You can hedge your bets," he added. "The shift in the IPO means there's more chance of it being on the earlier end of that window than on the later end."

The study does warn, however, that while IPO is one of the factors that will modulate the rate of Arctic sea-ice loss in coming decades, human-caused climate change remains the main factor.

"The timing of the first ice-free summer will also depend considerably on whether greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise or are curtailed," it states.

pathetic if they are growing excess CO2 will deplete arctic ice completely and hence rising sea levels, dangerous to many big coastal cities of the world, we are not going little ice age, i will takes hundreds to thousands years to go little ice age which i doubt we will ever enter any kind of ice age because of global warming, we are currently inter glaciated periods and no way near to enter so called little ice age @undertakerwwefan

This is the result of human greed for unlimited material needs/desires/power/richness/domination stressing and creating imbalance in nature.
Even though when all the neccesity of life being available but the urge for more luxuries has brought to this stage.

Another major factor is the laziness of human beings which has become more evident in name of modern life style.

Another major factor is ignorance and arrogance because who doesnt like the life of glamour and imaginative life style.

These factors are directly responsible for neglecting nature by humans.

Previous generations have lived a better and healthy lifestyle than that of present generations that too happily overall consisting of large families.
Reasons needs to be pondered upon.

When humans themselves wants to stay in shit then who can help?. I dont think anything to do with population.

Imagine every individual taking care of nature/planting trees/watering trees etc and disposing waste properly keeping the surrounding clean utilizing natural resources properly/specially water etc then things can be different I guess.

Leaving everything to government is not feasible neither can the government handle or can do it. The government cannot come and wash everybody *** no matter whatever the taxes are paid. It should be collective responsibility I guess but agree that governments should strictly prevent harm to nature from foreign exploitations/chemicals by companies/genetically modified seeds harmful to soil etc.

Everybody needs big accommodations even irrespective of family size on top of that houses which doesnt have proper ventilation, how can be one remain hale n hearty??? Will never have proper mental state.

Selfishness and intolarance is another big factor for such an state of affairs.

Extremism due to climate change is like hiding ones mistake and trying to take shortcut for temporary gains I guess.

Another factor is the mental corruptions of human beings commercialising everything inturn corrupting the whole earth.

Specially those will be held accountable by God whom have got the provision to care for nature also and it is no one except second major religious people of this world who will be held more accountable on the day of judgement than anyone else as they have got the clear provisions and instructions from God and surprisingly filth is more in those lands.
