KARACHI: The federal government-backed campaign to clean Karachi will kick-off in the metropolis today with the first target to de-silt all storm-water drains before Eid-ul-Azha.

Speaking to media, Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Haider Zaidi said, the campaign will work in two phases. “In the first phase, 32 nullahs will be cleaned in Karachi, while garbage from all areas of the city would be lifted in the second phase.”

“The clean Karachi campaign will continue for two weeks,” the minister added.

He added, the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) would play an important role in the campaign and provide its expertise in this regard. “The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC), District Municipal Corporations (DMC), Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), trade associations and K-Electric have also extended their support for the drive,” Zaidi said.

Zaidi further said hundreds of party supporters, citizens, as well as private entities, have asked him to include them in the "Clean Karachi" drive.

Private companies, celebrities and volunteers have pledged their support for the campaign, he added. "To make the drive effective, camps would be set up at various points," Zaidi shared.

Volunteers would also create public awareness, he added.

The "Clean Karachi" camping will begin from 12 noon onwards at KPT Head Office, Near Tower Bridge.

Earlier this week, Zaidi had vowed that he will clean up Pakistan's commercial hub, Karachi, in just two weeks.

The minister had said they would remove garbage from the metropolis' six districts. The people of Karachi and the federal government, alongside FixIt founder and the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) member of the National Assembly (MNA), Alamgir Khan, would clean the city, Zaidi has said.

One clean Karachi campaign will have short term effect.

-Garbage and filth will accumulate again when the campaign is done with and within a period of weeks.

-Need a long term planned action to dispose of garbage on a daily weekly basis like done in Islamabad or parts of Lahore, being done in some areas of Karachi as well.

-Landfills need to be increased and constructed with new techniques followed in big cities.

-Karachi need the resources and money the size of smaller countries, currently what Karachi gets is too meager and insignificant even though contributing the highest in federal taxes. Blame this on 18th amendment, NFC award...people's party, which is least concerned about Karachi problems, gets the largest chunk though...

- Local jobs for local people, on merit and not on quotas.

-Ba n the polythene bags of all kind in Karachi and in Pakistan, 75-80% of the trash consists of these polythene bags, which is not bio degradable and highly toxin when burnt or when in sunlight.

-Garbage need to be collected from home and apartments with big bins and need to be placed at vantage points, one reason you see lots of garbage on streets and corners is that the janitors collects the garbage from home and threw it to the nearest empty plots, beneath the flyovers, so on and so forth.

Many things more...

How about educating the uncivilized masses who dump garbage in every imaginable nook and corner and then curse the authorities for the mess?

This campaign is a good idea to treat the current problem, but people will still continue to throw their waste into the streets and nullahs unless given a better option by the government.

PTI has a huge opportunity, with the public momentum built up with this campaign to change the entire waste management process in Karachi and then the nation as a whole.

They should institute a mass recycling program to begin alongside this mass clean up. Bring in experts from Japan, especially the town of Kamikatsu; from this video below, and help people separate their waste. The incentive will be people will be paid for their recyclable waste, and organic material should collected for composting, and generating natural gas. All other waste, should have proper collection points, that are regularly picked up. Even some of this remaining waste, could be burned to generate electricity.

After all these options are available to the people, then and only then, anyone caught throwing their waste in the streets or nullahs should be fined.

In the days of the Victorian England, people would recycle everything, even the chicken bones, and trash collectors would pay homes for even this kind of waste, because it could be reused. We need to maximize recycling, as it will bring back valuable resources back into supply stream, rather than importing more. Recycling also creates jobs, minimizes filling up land fills, decreases the spread of disease and improves the look of the city, so that it is a pleasant place to be, for locals, and visitors. It could help boost local tourism and international tourism.

More often than not it is the local Janitor/Jamadaar who throws the garbage in large parts to the nook and corners around flyovers, empty plots as it is the easiest way, he won't go many kms to the main garbage/Kuchra Kundi(it is also a bad thing), there should not be too many Kachra Kundis or garbage dumps all around the city. There should be central land fills, garbage disposable area on may acres.

Yes people throwing garbage in commercial areas that is office goers, shoppers is another thing.

But the biggest amount of Kachra/garbage accumulated is the household garbage thrown by the Bhangi/Jamaadar on the corners and elsewhere collected from homes and apartments...have observed it in detail.

Spot on... But the the masses of Karachi are part of the problem....

You see Eid-ul-azha is round the corner.... Despite the authorities designating area for sacrifice you will see ""spare parts" lying everywhere...Last year not even the Governor house was spared.... wherever you go you will see a dead head staring at you... and these are not dumped by janitors...

So I say educating these dumb masses must be a priority and this is THE hardest part... Everything else is secondary...

After the government provides viable alternatives, cameras with facial recognition software can be installed in areas of highest littering. These people can be tracked back to their homes and given a warning, and asked to clean up their mess. If they refuse, they can be fined. after being given a few chances and being fined a few times, if they are repeat offenders, they can be publicly shammed if necessary. This also needs to be a police matter of enforcement, so people get the message that littering is a serious matter.

the most important thing is providing viable alternatives to the people, and asking nicely (as the police are doing with their salute then service campaign), as no one wants to liter if given a reasonable option, in their area.

You would have to be a Metric fail Ch****ya who faked his degree to get a job who can't make this with common local labor/construction engineering companies

appreciate the effort but its for every one to see basic necessity like garbage removal and cleaning is so politicized

.
2bn Dollars worth of daily waste Accumilate everyday in karachi

.

According to Mustafa Kamal, IK and Bajwa needs to discuss this with Wasim Akhtar and give him responsibility , then this problem will be solved because provincial and federal gov dont have all the info of the drainage system

.
What’s the Point? Unless there’s a proper waste management system and it’s cleaned everyday it’ll be back in a month because Pakistanis will say “look at that idiot. Throwing waste in the road side” while throwing an empty pack of chips outside his car window.
Proper waste management system might be possible if the government does it right. But Pakistanis are near impossible to fix sadly.

The point is that the federal government isn't responsible for waste management in the cities, but for this 2 week period the federal government is taking the onus on itself to clean the city and show how incompetent the provincial and local governments are. The federal government never set out to be the permanent waste managers of the city.

And before you blame Pakistanis, where is it justified that the city that pays the most tax has the smallest per capita budget amongst most cities in Pak. The slaves of interior Sindh keep voting for Bhutto and we Karachiites keep suffering.
