Muslims can't convert because apostasy is punishable by death in muslim countries. Despite that some still do, and when the threat of punishment for apostasy is taken away and a chance for asylum given like migrants to Europe, then that rate of conversion increases exponentially.
The Apostasy rule was implemented to keep Soldiers from defecting as the Meccans had Medina very well infiltrated. People in the USA have also been executed from treason, including a woman - nothing new. But even so, people in India are raped and killed for no reason.
