How fascinating. I have been here in Chennai for a year and haven't picked up anything worth note- other than token phrases. Chennai is a notoriously difficult city to live in without knowing Tamil, fortunately you can get along with help of colleagues and roommates. Salute to this adventurous girl, moving so far away from her comfort zone.

Coimbatore folk are generally very warm, welcoming and polite. (I may be biased since its my hometown). It is not surprising an open-minded, adventurous, intelligent woman like this has made many friends and has settled in well there.

I have never cared much for the attitude of the general people in Chennai....or the "Tamil" (if you can call it that) that they speak there. Maybe I am thinking a long time ago, but the experiences have not been so good there for me. Hopefully it has changed now. At least with non-Tamils, Chennaiites will make some accomodation for you since you are like a guest sort of....but if they see you are from another part of TN (as soon as you open your mouth), out comes a lot of the typical immature attitude and sometimes arrogance. This is of course somewhat stereotypical to say....all the good people in Chennai I apologize wholeheartedly!

And you forgot to include Niligiris in this list...There is a school in Niligiris called Hebrons there teachers are mostly from foreign countries and it is British Board school students never learn anything about India not even the local culture or language that place is like little Britain in Tamil Nadu....

Chennai has increasingly gone down the dumps. After having spent more than a decade of my early life there, I visted the place recently, the place has just deteriorated beyond recognition. I have no intentions of returning there unfortunately. Delhi, on the other hand has improved a bit, most notably on Gurgaon side. Noida side has gone down the dumpster.

What I've heard sounds pretty harsh and rolls off the tongue all "uDDupurulupuDUDU" like

urdu and french otoh, those sound smooth and poetic

Actually Tamil is not a local language in Nilgiri,apart from gudalur area and some areas adjoining mettupalayam,Majority are badugas(dominant in ooty,conoor,kothagiri thaluks),who speak badaga bashey,similar to old Kannada..remaining speaks tribal languages like kota,toda,kuruba-which are more akin to crude forms of Kannada..+paraya language(akin to Malayalam).. But they all speak fluent Tamil,specially the new generation/educated ones..
my cousin is settled near conoor,i use to go there frequently..

No way.... although Telugu and Kannda are originated from tamil, some words are sound the same but totally different even they'd have defferent meaning

Ya... In TN anywhere you go Tamil is much then English... Atleast try to learn to manage it. its not so tough

Yeah I have couple of friends who are baduga speakers.But they slightly mix up baduga with tamil though . only when i piss them off enough.

They use hundreds of Tamil words in their language,for eg-kavalai,thevai,uthavi,unmai,padippu,kadaisi etc(which are not found in modern Kannada)due to Tamil influence..even in grammar and pronunciation it sounds more close to Tamil than Kannada..
