is Vietnam their perceived enemy? why thailand does not go for the Kilo? whatever the case, if you think training and operating Kilo Subs are easy it is is a big mistake. China operates Kilo, I think you should have known better.

the training is reportely hard, very hard for our submariners. not only in warfare, but fitness and endurance. do you know our submarines speak russian? we have access to russian database. the Crew can communicate with russian sailors, holding meetings in russian language. no chance for chinese spies to get anything when listening. the men, yes, our submariners defend our country at sea. they are the first line, and probably, too, the last line of defence.

of course operating a submarine is not easy, especially for the country with limited resource like vietnam, one kilo may suck one third of your annual defense spending. you know what, the most qualified mentor who can educate viet on kilo operation is not russian, it is chinese PLA NAVY, once you take the south china sea into kilo's operation scenario. russian just knows little about how SCS would look like for a diesel submarine, while PLA NAVY has had the most active submarine operation in scs for decades. Thailand's decision makers take a very smart move this time to choose a best qualified submarine deal package. For the newcomer in submarine like thailand navy, at every obstacle they could meet in playing this beast in scs in the future, just make a phone call to beijing, they will pretty much immediately get the anwser like this, "hey guys, we got the problem before, don't panic, let me tell ya what to do....."

On topic, @somsak I briefly checked Chinese sources, the subs are export versions of 039A / 041 that's AIP, for weaponry like 533 torpedo or ASW/SLCM missile check webs alot info, but dB level confidential so no source avail. China testing jet propulsion and when ready may retrofit 041, that may include Thai Navy S026T, technically no prob becos of modular framework but subj to what kind of deal was made. Pls help verify these info.

Type039A AIP sub is good, 2nd best sub made in China. PLAN for latest Type039B AIP.

If the Chinese subs were inferior then Thailand would buy Kilo.

It also works the other way round that if Thailand was to buy Kilo then it would also know about Vietnam and Malaysia subs - simply the Chinese subs are better than the Russian ones.

Western subs probably are a little better still than Chinese subs but the huge extra cost was not worth it for the Thais.

It didn't have the ability to buy from any country.It's one thing to pay 1 billion $ for 3 subs with all the bells and wistles and another to pay 2 billion euros (2.2 billion $) for the same number of subs from France ,as an example (Scorpene subs).And with Western subs you don't have the guarantee that they'll integrate cruise missiles for example,nor did they offer any tech transfer as far as the article states.

Chinese Win Bid to Supply Three Subs to Navy

The navy has picked Chinese submarines costing 12 billion baht each to be commissioned in the force, a source on the procurement committee says.

The majority of the 17-strong committee voted to buy three Chinese submarines, saying it was the "best value for money".

The rest were split between submarines from Germany and South Korea.
The navy also received offers from Russia, Sweden and France.

The source said China beat other competitors as it offered subs equipped with superior weaponry and technology. Its subs are also able to stay underwater longer.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon backs the submarine project, citing a growing territorial threat and an increasing number of maritime missions. He said many neighbouring countries are also deploying submarines.

Gen Prawit said he would forward to the cabinet the navy's submarine procurement decision once it becomes available.

Before the procurement panel made its decision, Gen Prawit was quoted by a navy source as saying that if the submarines were not bought by the current government, the navy might not have the chance to get them again.

Modern Chinese subs are very advanced.

Obviously the propaganda from the West will always downplay any rival weapon so that their companies end up winning the deals.

Thailand wouldn't choose a submarine that is 'very loud' because the main purpose of a weapon is that it has to perform well. Even if you get tech transfers, no point getting tech transfers of outdated technology.

China's modern submarines such as type 041 are very advanced. Otherwise China wouldn't be buying these submarines for the PLA Navy.

Dude you are repeating the same old lame reasons put up by Western arms manufacturers and Russia as to why anyone would buy from China.

No way would the Thais purchase rubbish sub's - they need submarines that are good enough to go against anyone in the neighbourhood - Singapore will soon have latest German sub's.

While I agree that these sub's are not quite at the standard of say German sub's, they would not be that far behind either.

Very interesting to see traditional middle-income Western client states like Turkey and Thailand now
