KYODO
LONDON – Three Asian universities made the top 30 for the first time in an influential ranking of the world’s top 1,000 institutions released Tuesday.

The National University of Singapore moved up two places from last year to tie at No. 22 — its best ranking to date — while China’s Peking University climbed two spots to tie at No. 27 and Tsinghua University jumped five spots to reach No. 30, according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

Britain’s Oxford University once again topped the list, now in its 14th year, with the University of Cambridge at No. 2 for the first time. The California Institute of Technology and Stanford University tied at No. 3.

The University of Tokyo, Japan’s top institution, fell seven places to No. 46, its worst-ever performance, with researchers attributing the results to a lower proportion of Ph.D.s, a worsening student-staff ratio and falling research productivity due to a decline in funding.

Next in line for Japan was Kyoto University, which tied at No. 74, up 17 places over last year. A total of 71 Japanese institutions were on this year’s list, 14 of which were new entrants.

“The rise of China in this year’s table is remarkable and demonstrates the way the global higher education landscape is changing,” Phil Baty, editorial director for global rankings at Times Higher Education, said in a statement. He noted that two Chinese schools were listed in the top 30 for the first time.

He added that East Asian nations will need to work hard to stay competitive as China “soars to join the global elite.”

Baty said the University of Tokyo’s continued decline is “a worrying trend” and called on the institution to “diversify its funding streams to remain a key global player in higher education.”

More than half of Japanese universities’ annual revenue comes from government expenditures, but national funding for higher education declined by 12 percent between 2004 and 2015, researchers said.

The comprehensive global rankings assess institutions on several factors including teaching, research, citations, international outlook and industry income.

The Times have released their annual list of the best universities in the world and Korea's top universities have suffered a slight fall.

The list, which features Oxford and Cambridge in the top two places, takes into consideration a number of factors including teaching, research, and international outlook.

Seoul University, the number one university in Korea according to The Times, fell from the 72nd best university in the world in 2017, to the 74th best university in the world in 2018.

Meanwhile, the other Korean university in the top 100, KAIST, had a slight drop from number 89 to number 95.

Ehwa Women's University dropped out of the top 500 and was placed between number 501-600.

Pohang University, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, and Kyung Hee University also saw their overall rankings drop.

However, there was some good news with Sungkyunkwan University, Yonsei University, Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology seeing a rise in their rankings.

Also, Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology was not even featured on the list last year but took up a place in the top 250 in this year's rankings.

Here is a full list of Korean Universities that featured in the top 500:

  • Seoul National University - 74
  • Korea Advanced Institut of Science and Technology - 95
  • Sungkyunkwan University - 111
  • Pohang University of Science and Technology - 137
  • Korea University - 201-250
  • Ulsan Institute of Science and Technology - 201-250
  • Yonsei University - 201-250
  • Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology - 351-400

Five Hong Kong universities achieve best rankings in recent years on world list

The University of Hong Kong maintained its top standing among institutions of higher education in the city, rising three places to 40th on the latest World Universities Ranking while five of six local universities also achieved their best positions on the list in the past five years.

On Tuesday, Times Higher Education, which provides global coverage on higher education, released its World Universities Ranking for 2018. The rankings take into account academic semesters stretching across two calendar years. Hong Kong had six of its eight public universities on the list.

It pretty much depends on which rankings you use... I prefer QS or ARWU though.

If we were to believe Times University rankings, you will get the impression that Asian Universities overall perform very subpar against western ones, with the exception of a few flagships like NUS, Tsinghua, Peking, Tokyo and Nanyang. And to be honest, I think some of these rankings are pretty bull... Why? Because I can see that the lowest ranking university here in the Netherlands was still in the top 200. Now, there is nothing wrong when institutes like Leiden or Delft are highly ranked (Even the high ranking of #72 for my own EUR can somewhat be justified since their medical and business faculties are one of the largest and most renowned in Europe).

But the fact why a lesser known university like Maastricht (#103) (Their Med school is alright) which has a fraction of the funding and research power of a uni like, lets say, ROC's NTU (#198), KAIST (#95), Pohang (#137), Jiao Tong (#188) or Fudan (#116) is still ranked higher, is completely beyond me... I can vouch for the sorry state of some of its faculties, since I originally live here... Like, did you know that the UM Faculty of Arts is located opposite of one of the city's most notorious coffeeshops/weed stores (Club 69)? Google map it if you don't believe me (Grote Gracht 90-92)! But then again, most art students are likely to be part stoner anyways, so at least they won't have to walk far for their fix! XD

Congratulations to China. It seems the rivals to China are suffering.

I know China places greater emphasis on science and has just initiated a program to promote universities' global rankings.

Nonetheless, while prestige is somewhat important, what is more important is to do great things silently.

Why supa powa indian universities at the bottom of the rankings table? Being the top in the fields of cow tech, hindu math, art of delusion, etc. is not considered as a criteria here?
