Chinese Scientists Make Breakthrough in Quantum Computing

A typical response from our talented chemical engineering student again. If it is a new breakthrough made by American scientist, he will claim this as a new convincing proof about US's "indisputable leadership in quantum science"; but now this is something done by China, hmmm, this is nothing but "such random articles about one or two achievements is misleading".

Research is a gradual process which involves thousands of scientists and experiments. Only very few are by themselves revolutionary. Most are evolutionary.

Find me any place where I just quote one American study and say that it is brilliant?

The problem is that you are reading only 2 research papers on quantum computing from China and going Gaga over it when there are literally hundreds of comparable papers world wide in various quantum ict fields.

What one needs to look is through a holistic lens. Taking into account all the papers patents and other public information.

Quantum Computing Arms Race Takes Shape as
China, US, Russia Vie for Supremacy

Chinese computer scientists have developed a prototype of a groundbreaking new quantum computer, and promised to create a version as powerful as the world's most powerful supercomputer by 2020. RIA Novosti contributor Ilya Plekhanov explains how and why the world's leading military powers plan to convert these machines into powerful weapons.

Last week, Chinese computing engineers announced that they had successfully created a quantum computer which is faster than the early generation of mid-20th century conventional computing machines.

The innovation, developed by researchers at the University of Science and Technology at Hefei, and presented in Shanghai last Wednesday, is groundbreaking because it uses the way particles interact at a subatomic level to make calculations. Conventional computers, on the other hand, make use of electronic gates, switches and binary code.

Xinhua news agency explained that unlike conventional silicon chip-based computers, which render data in one of two states (1 or 0), quantum computers allow data to exist in both states simultaneously, giving quantum computers the ability to hold exponentially more information.

Quantum computers operate on quantum bits or 'qubits' – the unit of quantum information analogous to the classical bit. The computing power of a quantum computer grows exponentially as the number of quantum bits (or 'qubits') which can be manipulated is increased. Accordingly, a quantum computer with 50 manipulatable qubits would be more powerful than the Sunway TaihuLight, the fastest supercomputer in existence today (and also operating in China, incidentally).

Chinese scientists say they are making rapid progress, and that they expect to build a quantum computer as powerful as a common laptop by the end of this year, and as powerful as the world's most powerful supercomputer by 2020. The Chinese prototype quantum computer system is said to already be over 24,000 times faster than its foreign counterparts.

Commenting on this groundbreaking achievement by Chinese scientists, military observer and RIA Novosti contributor Ilya Plekhanov explained that purely theoretical computation capabilities aside, "the news is of great importance for the military sphere, where the possible use of quantum computers is being discussed with greater and greater frequency. All leading countries are aiming to be the first to create such machines."

Plekhanov explained that the first and most obvious military application for a modern, fully functional quantum computer is the capability to engage in near-instantaneous hacking into encrypted military servers, and those controlling the national infrastructure systems of the probably enemy. "In case of a military conflict, [having this capability] would give one side a huge advantage," the expert noted.

US cybersecurity analysts have confirmed that other countries are already out there mining US systems, storing the data, and patiently waiting for the advent of quantum systems that would allow them to gain access to the most heavily encrypted US secrets.

The speed of data computation and processing which quantum systems will allow for will also "significantly improve the work of unmanned and autonomous military vehicles, to which the conduct of military operations will be entrusted in the foreseeable future," Plekhanov noted.

"Simply put, the military robots of the country that creates the first quantum computer will be able to make decisions faster, work more accurately, engage multiple targets, 'see' the battlefield better and calculate forward to greater depth than enemy robots. And this means that they would win battles," the observer added.

Plekhanov explained that quantum computers will also be used at various stages of the design of new weapons, new materials, "and even in the development of new strategies for warfare. [Battlefield] projections, naturally, are another area where quantum computers can be applied. Ray Johnson, the former technical director for Lockheed Martin, once said that quantum computers would be able to predict how satellite software behaves following a solar burst in the sun or a pulse from a nuclear explosion," something that's currently either very difficult or impossible to do.

With the possible benefits of quantum computing self-evident, Plekhanov noted that multiple players, including Russia, China, the US, Canada, Japan, Israel and Europe are striving to get the upper hand, with China and the US battling for the top spot.

Russia's Quantum Computing Research

Earlier this year, Foundation for Advanced Research project head Maxim Vakstein revealed to Sputnik that the advanced military research agency had started work on the creation of a quantum computer based on superconductor technology in 2016, with "the technology that the project aims to create [allowing] our country to take a decent spot in the race to create the 'computer of the future'."

Vakstein did not offer any further details, but late last year, two leading Russian quantum computing research institutes – the Russian Quantum Center and the MISiS National University of Science & Technology, also announced the creation of a joint project known as Quantum Center, which aims at combining their efforts to create quantum computers.

And quantum computing specifically for military applications hasn't gone without notice either, Plekhanov noted. Last year, the Russian state atomic energy corporation Rosatom, the Foundation for Advanced Studies and the Ministry of Education and Science signed onto a joint three-year project on the development of a quantum computer. Rosatom's nuclear weapons research institute at the All-Russia Research Institutes of Automatics (VNIIA) has been charged with taking the lead in organizing the project.

Keeping tight-lipped on the details of the latter project, Sergei Salikhov, director of the Department of Science and Technology Ministry of Education and Science, did give a hint as to its objectives, saying: "This is the first time that we are joining such a serious project, where the boundaries of fundamental and applied science are somewhat arbitrary, and the results will be of significance importance to our country's defense capabilities."

China and the US: Differing Approaches

US experts have compared victory in the creation of the world's first powerful quantum computer with the moon landing, and added that a loss in the quantum computing race would be much more severe than the consequences of losing the race to the moon.

In a recent interview for National Review, Dr. Chad Rigetti, a former member of the IBM's quantum-computing research group and now the CEO of his own company, Rigetti Computing, emphasized that "computing superiority is fundamental to long-term economic superiority, safety, and security."

The US, Rigetti said, must have a strategy that views quantum computing "as a way to regain American superiority in high-performance computing."

Plekhanov noted that at present, "it is believed that investments into the development of quantum computers by companies such as Microsoft, Intel, IBM, D-Wave and Google make the US is the leader in this field. But such confidence may be deceiving."

Last year, for instance, White House officials admitted that Washington's superiority in computer technology was "under siege," and that more investment was needed specifically in the area of quantum technologies.

Science education figures are indicative, Plekhanov wrote. Currently, US educational institutions produce just over half-a-million graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. In China, that figure is already 4.7 million, and growing.

"China is already launching unhackable satellites with quantum-based communication systems, building quantum radars, hundreds of kilometers' worth of quantum communication lines, and creating the world's fastest supercomputers," the journalist added.

Europe is focusing on the creation of its own quantum computer over the next ten years, investing the equivalent of about a billion dollars into its Quantum Technologies Flagship Program.

Meanwhile, US state-based spending in the field of quantum developments is currently less than $200 million. The US, Plekhanov noted, is "pinning all their hopes on the success of private corporations." However, unlike the US, which has spread its considerable R&D spending on a broad range of perspective weapons, China, is focusing on long-term investments in a narrow range of areas, with projects outlined in detail years in advance.

Ultimately, "if China manages to become the leader of the 'quantum revolution', then the geopolitical and military picture in the world will change dramatically," the observer concluded.

This is a congressional report. They identified 3 fields:

3) Quantum sensors

As per their report, they think China behind US in quantum computing in general terms, which I agree. However, I believe China is ahead in certain quantum computing technologies/techniques, which is also what the article was saying. The ultimate aim is to build a 'universal quantum computer' which can achieve 'quantum supremacy'. Until this is achieved, the race is still on.

For quantum encrypt/comm, this is what it said. No Chinese claim this since we don't brag, this is from a 'KANGRES REPORT'

The typical Indy mentality is, if India cannot do it, the Chinese cannot possibility be so far ahead because Indians have brahmic brains, that's why 40% of NASA are black Indians and India shall have exascale computer in 2016.

There is not just one or two papers, there are a lot of papers, but these two effort are world leading and record breaking hence worthy of mention.

Oh they most definitely will. They asked for more funding in that same report and testimony. Where do you think that funding goes?

This was a very successful ploy for funding during the Soviet Era, where the US always overplayed Soviet threat and Soviet advance in science, when by the 60s, Soviets were already way behind the US in multiple areas.

A radar is not a quantum sensor. There could be parts of the radar that are sensors. Like a classical radar has emitters, and detectors etc. But those are just parts, not fundamentally the radar itself.

I know this because the technology is simply not there. Right now you can only sustain entanglement at approx 10 photons or so in very tight conditions. For a quantum radar you would need huge number of photons entangled, in very tough conditions of the open world.

It is like someone claiming that they have a computer of 1000 exaflops. Do you really need additional information to rubbish a claim of 1000 exaflops?

Like one Indian paper mentioned a 132 exaflops computer. Did you really need anything apart from the basic understanding of the field that that is not possible?

Which to me, she is in quantum comm.crypt and a portion of quantum computing. As per my initial argument there are only two tangible technologies for the foreseeable future, that report added a third which was quantum sensors. I still stand by my view that only quantum comm/crypt and computing is realistic within the next 2 decades. You are assuming they are downplaying their own progress, which it didn't, how does reaffirming US leadership in general quantum computing downplay US progress? How do you overplay Chinese achievement? Seriously? Those are facts, you either did it or didn't do it. Both countries still do not have a working universal quantum computer which demonstrates quantum supremacy.

Use some common sense, if people talk about quantum radars of course they are talking about the quantum sensors right? They wouldn't be talking about the quantum radar truck right, since by you logic a quantum radar also consists of a truck ferrying it around.

Umm.. NO. For actual quantum computing to work, there is apart from quantum communications and quantum computing; quantum sensors, and theoretical quantum computation and algorithms.

There can't be ANY computer without sensors/hardware, AND algorithms.

Quantum Sensors as I am using it, not only includes what one would generally label as sensors like cameras etc. They also overlap a lot with hardware. The memory that will store qubits etc.

Science research is also not absolute. There are at least 10 different ways of storing qubits themselves. And then there are categories among these 10 different ways.

The way it is working here is that if Chinese scientists do good in certain field, suddenly a news paper writes that Chinese scientists are leading, and everyone starts blasting out here that you are a leader.

How they are overplaying it?

  1. By not telling people that this quantum computer is a non-universal quantum computer.
  2. By saying that this is the first quantum computer to attain classical supremacy when it is really supremacy over ancient computers of the 40s and 50s, AND doing so by using a very specific method.
  3. By not using and highlighting other countries work at ALL.
  4. By not telling people that this is a boson sampling machine.
  5. The achievements are not being overplayed in research journals, they are being overplayed in media and forums like these with people who know nothing about quantum computing.

Science research is also not absolute. There are at least 10 different ways of storing qubits themselves. And then there are categories among these 10 different ways.

Science research results are absolute. There maybe many ways storing qubits, but each way to store the qubit has got to be proven, it's a yes or no answer. You either store x qubits in this method or store x qubits in that method.

The way it is working here is that if Chinese scientists do good in certain field, suddenly a news paper writes that Chinese scientists are leading, and everyone starts blasting out here that you are a leader.

He kept rambling about a universal quantum computer when it was clear that it was not what the researchers are talking about. They are talking about building a prototype quantum computer which is faster than the earliest form of traditional computer which is about the size of a house.

We need to understand a few thing about quantum computer here. We, as in China and the USA, are at a stage where we try to control the qubits in a quantum computer. We are talking about the core technology here. The rest, the memory, operation system, store drive, and all that can be design later in a universal quantum computer. Those are the easy part. So here, our local Indian friend get confused. He thought China is making a universal quantum computer that act like a modern traditional computer (the one where he can type his message on this board). LOL

For a quantum computer to act like a modern traditional laptop, you would need a million of qubits. And here is where we are dealing with. As I said, China currently hold the record for most controlling qubits, 10 and this should be where the comparison in each country level of quantum research are at. China lead in this particular field (controlling qubits) while the US lead in the area of error fault tolerance. In order to have a working universal quantum computer, you need to be able to control million of qubits and be able to design a gate that detect any error result. It complements one another, just like that.

Also it is worth noting that our local Indian have the typical mindset that the US being in the quantum research longer, thus the perception of longer experience and more capable. This is in fact true on paper, but in practical reality, that is not always the case. Case in point, the supercomputer platform. China was nowhere in the top supercomputer research just 20 years ago. But now China is leading the race in supercomputer (fastest supercomputer thus far) and on the verge of producing the 1st exascale supercomputer. How is that possible, you may ask? Answer is simple, SCALE AND HARDWORK. China has massive workforce, fund, and determination that can leapfrog other earlier research.

I am following all the data and publications surrounding quantum computing. I am not an active researcher, but know far more than any one can fathom here.

  不确定原理是海森堡于1927年首次提出的。随后几年里,罗伯逊、薛定谔等人陆续导出了若干严格的不确定关系。作为量子力学中的一个著名结论,不确定关系告诉人们:在一个遵循量子力学规律的体系中,两个不对易的力学量(例如位置和动量)一般不能同时具备确定的值。不确定关系违背了人们的日常生活经验,却是量子物理体系的重要特征。

  近一个世纪以来,人们用各种各样的关系式描述不确定原理,但通常只涉及两个力学量。直接从包含两个力学量的不确定关系出发,一般难以得到包含多个力学量的紧凑的不确定关系。因此,为了导出包含多个力学量的紧凑的关系式,往往需要另辟蹊径。

  在本工作中,研究人员在理论上导出了包含角动量三个分量的罗伯逊不确定关系。这一新的不确定关系不能从已有的不确定关系直接得到,因此是对角动量不确定关系的一项有价值的补充。进一步,研究人员在金刚石氮-空位缺陷自旋体系上,对这一新的不确定关系进行了实验检验。该物理体系是固态单自旋量子体系,易于初始化、操控和读出,是当前发展较为成熟的量子调控实验体系,在构建室温固态量子计算机和实现量子精密测量等研究中具有很好的应用前景。

  在具体实验中,研究人员利用其前期发展的成熟实验技术,制备出一系列高精度的单自旋量子态,针对每一个量子态,通过多次重复实验测量了自旋角动量各分量的期望值和标准差。经过严格的数据处理和分析,实验结果支持了新的不确定关系。该工作丰富了多个力学量的不确定关系,尤其是角动量的不确定关系。

  此外,杜江峰团队此前利用自旋体系,对一类基于统计距离的不确定关系进行了首次实验检验[Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 160405 (2016)]。

  上述研究得到了国家自然科学基金委、科技部、教育部和中科院的支持。
