ZTE Q3 net profit jumps 191 pct on 4G growth in China

HONG KONG Thu Oct 23, 2014 5:06am EDT

Oct 23 (Reuters) - Chinese telecom equipment maker ZTE Corp on Thursday posted a 191 percent jump in quarterly net profit, thanks to strong demand for equipment to build China's next-generation mobile networks.

ZTE posted a 703 million yuan ($114.89 million) profit for July-September, the company said in a filing to the Shenzhen stock exchange.

The result was in line with a 570 million to 770 million yuan estimate, according to Reuters' calculations based on company data released in August.

ZTE, which competes with Huawei Technologies Co Ltd in the telecom gear and smartphone sectors, posted a record first-half profit in August thanks to improving margins in its global business and higher 4G capital expenditure in China.

Shares in the company fell 0.4 percent in Hong Kong prior to the announcement on Thursday. The stock has risen 12 percent so far this year. (1 US dollar = 6.1190 Chinese yuan) (Reporting by Yimou Lee)

China's 5-Year Plan Revealed

Analyst gives inside scoop on China's future

R. Colin Johnson

10/23/2014 04:40 PM EDT

PORTLAND, Ore. -- The year 2016 will be the Year of the Monkey in China, as well as the first year of the country's 13th Five-Year Plan, this one spanning 2016 to 2021. The air is already abuzz with what those long-term goals will be and, perhaps more importantly, how the Chinese plan to finish off the five-year plan spanning from 2011 (the Year of the Rabbit) to 2015 (the Year of the Goat).

The answer to that last question is with a final big push, according to International Data Corporation. The Chinese government has designated five technology goals as top priorities to finish off the Year of the Goat and get the Year of the Monkey off to a intelligent start. And China has dedicated the funding and the economic pressure to accomplish those goals, according to IDC.

"The Chinese government is doing a number of things to promote e-commerse in China," Kitty Fok, managing director of IDC China, said in a company video posted on YouTube (shown below). "The first thing they have done is create a program called Broadband China the goal of which is to increase broadband access to everyone in the country -- with a goal of covering 95 percent of cities whereas today its only 45%."

Kitty Fok sharing her views of the Chinese government's strategy to advance the semiconductor industry in China with nationwide broadband and smartphones using local branded components.

However, according to Fok, the purpose is not just to increase the volume of locally manufactured smartphones -- the goal there is 1 billion by 2017. At the same time, the government wants to improve the quality of the connectivity: "Optimization is very important in China." With high-quality connectivity, a whole new growth area of Internet services could bloom -- once citizens trust that their online purchases will not expose them to the rampant scourge of hackers in China.

"The second thing," according to Fok, "is to promote local semiconductor industry with the goal of building local brand CPUs and applications processors."

Some successful local brands, such as Spreadtrum Communications Inc. and Fuzhou Rockchip Electronics Co. Ltd., already have their own branded CPUs, but they dominate only the lower end of the market. The Chinese government wants that domination to spread to high-end smartphones, and it is providing the economic and political pressure to accomplish that, according to Fok.

"The Chinese government is already investigating the royalty programs at Qualcomm," she said, assumably prompting Qualcomm to partner with China's SMIC (Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation). "Intel has partnered with Rockchip. This is the first time ever that Intel has partnered with a Chinese semiconductor company. Intel will supply their APU [and] express modem to Rockchip. Then Rockchip can design their own silicon."

In addition to entering a strategic agreement with Rockchip, Intel has invested $1.5 billion to acquire a 20% share of Tsinghua UniGroup, which controls Spreadtrum and RDA Microelectronics.

Many visionaries have called this move by Intel brilliant, since it gets the company into the market on the ground level. It also could use up the excess 14nm manufacturing capabilities that Intel needs to recoup its multibillion-dollar investment in advanced fabs. Doomsayers call it the beginning of the end for Intel as Chinese manufacturers steal its intellectual property (IP) with impunity from the Chinese government.:lol:

They planed to build their own phones in India, however, the chips and cameras are come from China or Taiwan. Which parts will be produced in India is unclear, but definatedly the shell. Indian are very advanced in shell building, such as their home made aircraft carrier.

touch screens、LDS antenna、battery、alloy body、precision connectors、wireless chargers、all sorts of modules etc etc。。。。none of which our Indian friends seem to be able to make at this stage。

And base band chips, cpu chips, gravity sensors, electronic compass sensors, light sensors, infrared sensors, 3G, 4G modules, large scale integrated circuits. Its so far away for them to achieve this stage based at their electronic industry.
And the only solution to them is that buy, buy.

Fantastic choice.

I was really tempted by that one as well. The specs are amazing.
In Amazon, the Huawei Mate 7 price tag is $859.99. :D Which is more expensive than iphone 6 4.7 Inch 16GB Unlocked (T-Mobile) Silver.

I haven't heard of Oppo products outside of the smartphone at all until you guys told so. Just made a quick search in Amazon Germany and was amazed how expensive they are. The headphone OPPO PM-1 costs 1500 Euro and the OPPO blue-ray player BDP-105 costs 1625 Euro.

Well we dont really have large elecrtonic giants Like China, South Korea, Japan and U.S but we still have some pretty decent Small size electronics companies of which mselectronics is one of the leading in Europe and Cello Electronics which is one of Europe's most innovative LCD TV. You should also know that despite our economy being dominanted by services/banking industry(in which we are world leaders) we still rank second globally in aerospace manufacturing with 17% market share.:agree: We also have the world 4th largest telecommunication company(Vodafone)Contrary to common belief, our manufacturing is strong with the UK currently the 11th largest manufacturing nation in the world. Moreover, manufacturing makes up 54% of our exports. and our electronics Industry is worth £78bn a year and its the world’s fifth largest in terms of production, plus we are also home to 40% of Europe’s semiconductor design houses. So we might not be a global giant in this sector but we are not a midget either, we are indeed among the top 10 as well i would say.:-)
Thank you very much !

I heard Vodafone coz still has some business in HongKong. For Chinese, the most famous Britain brands they r BAE, Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Mini, AstonMartin, most r luxury car & jet engine makers.
