The 17-year old son of a local government official in Hefei spread gasoline on a 17-year girl and lit her on fire when she rejected his advance and stalking, almost killing her but barely surviving the attack. The typical tragic event taking place in China daily and nothing unusual about that.

What was different about this case from hundreds of other similar crimes was that the official used his power and position to pressure the victim to plea a leniency for his son in court. The victim's family posted her story on Weibo and the Chinese public is outraged by yet another case of a powerful government official trying to cover up the crimes of his child.

Actually the case had almost nothing to do with the guy's father. The said official is certainly not high ranking enough to influence the courts even within the most absurd scenario.

This is just some random rumor and general disinformation based on blogs.

The details are still scarce and mired in conflicting information. But whatever the case, my sympathy to the girl who's life is now ruined.

The father's part is that he pressured the victim to sign the letter of leniency petition to court according to the victim's family.

In other countries, the father would be on his knees begging for a forgiveness and a mercy for his son regardless of his position in a situation like this. Not so in China.

The case was not reported to media for months and there is no trial date yet.

What she needs is a justice so that more victims to abusive government officials do not happen in the future.

I already told you, the guy's father is in no position to influence the court, he's just a low ranking government worker. The case and trial is not reported by media because of privacy law protecting non adults, not by some imaginary influence.

The case only came to light because of compensation dispute between the two families. The so called leniency is granted because the defendant is not an adult, not by lobbying.

Dear Korean,

There is a bank robbery here in my neighbourhood just today. Considering it happened in your country's master's country, is that big enough to make it international news?

Usual case of failed love affairs occuring across asia.

It happens everywhere. The powerful persons will try to protect their kins with money and power.
