Chinese navy escort ships complete first joint escort operation

The Chinese navy's 11th and 12th escort groups accomplished their first joint escort operation in Gulf of Aden on Friday.

The groups escorted six merchant ships from China, Singapore, Norway, South Korea and Portugal.

The two fleets held a handover ceremony on the destroyer "Qingdao" before the joint escort operation. The farewell ceremony of the 11th group will be held on July 23. Then the flotilla will leave the Gulf of Aden and Somali waters and embark on a goodwill visit.

The 11th group has escorted 184 ships in 43 operations since it started the mission on Feb. 27. A total of 126 pirate vessels in 58 incidents were successfully driven away by the fleet.

To date, the Chinese navy fleets have escorted 4,727 ships from countries all over the world.

I can imagine how big a budget the Chinese Navy needs just to escort her merchant fleet through the Arabian Sea alone. More naval vessels are definitely call for.

Why should we, as smaller nations, jealous and suspicious of her motivations. We should at least try to catch her 'expansion wind' and benefit ourselves by cooperating with her. Even Singapore isn't comfortable that :

It's MM Lee's job to worry, however no one can change the fact, or should attempt to, that China has the responsibility to bring her people out of the poverty level. People have to recognize China is still relative poor but she seems rich and powerful because of her size and population.

Unlike the US who has a much stronger economic base, China is not going to dally in some military adventure and give back what she worked so hard for the past few decades if she could help it. But then international politics demands each country bargains as hard as one can for it's own country and should treated as such rather than mislabeled it as warmongering.
