A US warship has sailed close to an artificial island created by China in the South China Sea as part of a “freedom of navigation” operation.

The USS John S McCain destroyer sailed within six nautical miles of Mischief Reef, part of the disputed Spratly Islands south of the Paracel Islands.

A US official said a Chinese frigate sent radio warnings at least 10 times to the USS McCain.

“They called and said ‘Please turn around, you are in our waters,’” the official said.

“We told them we are a US [ship] conducting routine operations in international waters.”

The official said the interactions were all “safe and professional”, with the operation lasting about six hours from start to finish.

China’s foreign ministry said: “The US destroyer’s actions have violated Chinese and international laws, as well as severely harmed China’s sovereignty and security.

“China is very displeased with this and will bring up the issue with the US side.”

China claims nearly all of the South China Sea, despite partial counter-claims from Taiwan and several south-east Asian nations including the Philippines, Brunei, Malaysia and Vietnam.

The freedom of navigation operation – known in the military as a “Fonop” – was bound to annoy Beijing and was the third of its kind carried out by the United States since President Donald Trump took office.

It comes amid soaring tensions on the Korean Peninsula over Kim Jong-un’s missile programme, and as the United States seeks to push China into more assertively restraining North Korea.

Trump this week warned North Korea it faced “fire and fury” if it continued to threaten America.

Pentagon spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Chris Logan declined to comment on whether there had been a freedom of navigation sailing, but said: “We are continuing regular Fonops, as we have routinely done in the past and will continue to do in the future.

can‘t really blame the chinese ship for keep repeating the message...after the disgraceful incident which almost sank the Fitzgerald we now have legitimate reasons to believe all US warships have a tendency to turn total blind and deaf sometimes. should keep sending until they get the message loud and clear no matter it's 10 times or 30 or 50

One thing for Sure, Chinese loves to give warnings, If US ship stayed overnite, Warnings could have touched 100

Unprofessional trouble makers of the U.S. navy deterioriate the peace and security of the SCS as always.

First their useless ships run like blind chicken into innocent container ships just because its dark outside, now they cant even read a map and talking ignorantly back to security trying to put them back on the right path. At this rate they are becoming a bigger threat to international trade and civilians in the region, than real pirates.

These islands are illegal entities and should be destroyed. China will build artificial islands anywhere in the world and claim the surrounding seas as their own?

Imperialism 2.0?

First come to beg us, Indians are only good at begging diplomacy, second India is hopelessly can't do anything its , keep crying over imperialism is your best solution.

Imperialism pays off very well. So yes.

Hmm...that's certainly not the ancient Chinese, Buddhist, culture I know of. The wannabes like you will ultimately learn with time.

Anyways, you wanna try your hand at imperialism, be my guest. Let me remind you, though, you won't go unchallenged anymore.

And the end result is still the same, american ship being expelled from the area. Kudos to the Chinese for managing to drive off the americans without firing a single shot. The construction works in the island by the Chinese shall continue smoothly.

China sit 24/7 on these Islands, US navy ran thousand miles just to be present for few minutes to half day  to get our attention. The more they come the better chance for China to militarize these islands, you can't have better excuse than that. If US is smart, they should join China to patrol Indian Ocean an get within 12 miles of Andaman & Nicobar , as Chinese saying 两害相权取其轻,两利相权取其重, US should chose the less troublesome for themselves.

Oh you mean that they need to be warned repeatly so the Destroyer won't hit the island accidentally, and have to be repaired again, like the Fitzgerald? Ah I see. Well, that's a good will from China to USA then. China afraid the Destroyer get an accident again. Specially when they are the same ship class as Fitzgerald. You know, same ship-class, same defect.

USA needs to be busy solving the mess it created in middle east
No, everyone can see through that the American govt is trying to make another mess in Asia, so that foreign investment will go back to USA. The standoff between China and India, the Korean nuclear problem are also part of the plan. Only ASEAN are smart enough to avoid this trap by signing sea code of conduct with China, this is also why yesterday American sent a warship to SCS to stir up trouble.
