And if your paper currency is worthless, then no shopkeeper or landlord will accept it. What are they going to do, keep it under their bed as a souvenir?

If it's off the books, it's illegal and they will seize it anyway. Or you could just live as a homeless person, and they might just forget about you. But is that really worth it.

Gold and silver is a fine way to store money, unless they pull another move like India and you are forced to sell your gold reserves at 20% of what it's worth to some shady black market dealer.
