Imagine when you have a bag of money, but have no gun. What would happen if you get sighted by those bandits?
It will be a repeat of the century of humiliation.
If you are rich but you can't defend yourself, then others will exploit you.

Some thing you mentioned had no problem(I mean right thing)and some thing did not happened in ordinary people's lives but to some so called elite people.everyday no working but having struggle session against long dead Confucius?destroying everything representing old China's feudalism?witching hunting for bad elements?wives turning against husbands, sons reporting their parents....no human morals and ethnics during that chaos.
So ultimately, China has to be both rich and heavily armed to survive in this world as a prosperous nation. ^^
Although I generally have sympathy for the leftists, I'm worried about the recent revisionist history of cultural revolution endorsed by the far left. The common ground for the unity within the communist party in the last 30 years was the conviction the cultural revolution was a disaster and it should never be repeated again. If this common ground is to be lost I really dread what's coming next.
Sure, the cultural revolution was considered as a disaster by many elite people but it had no meaning to ordinary people. So no worry about it should be there.Although I generally have sympathy for the leftists, I'm worried about the recent revisionist history of cultural revolution endorsed by the far left. Zhao Ziyang was an utter shame, he was not only trying to disband our military industry.
He was also trying to compromise with those CIA backed rebels who wanted to bring the chaotic situation into China.
Even his old subordinate Wen Jiabao refused to attain his funeral.
