China has made yet another breakthrough in rice yield.
A team led by top scientist Yuan Longping, known in China as "the father of hybrid rice," has achieved a record harvest for hybrid rice production with an average yield of 1,026 kilograms per mu, or 15,392 kilograms per hectare -- the highest yield in the world.
The Ministry of Agriculture says the new record was achieved at a farm in Xupu County in central China's Hunan Province and was confirmed by Ministry experts.
Yuan Longping, an academic from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, developed the world's first hybrid rice in 1974.
The new record beat a previous record of an average yield of 1,004 kilogram per mu set earlier this month in Longshan County, Hunan Province.
Yuan announced that the breakthrough in Hunan and said he looked forward to even higher yield in the future.
"I think we have made a breakthrough in the fourth harvest of hybrid rice. Next we aim to achieve higher yields. We aim to achieve 1067 kilograms per mu."
