Chinese hackers compromise US weapons' designs: Report

Well, it was the US who was crying foul play, from the Chinese side I heard not one word.
Why not cry foul?

CNN.com - U.S. resumes surveillance flights off Chinese coast - May 7, 2001
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Unarmed and unescorted, a U.S. Air Force RC-135 flew a surveillance flight along the Chinese coast Monday, the first such flight since an April 1 collision between a U.S. plane and a Chinese fighter jet.
We routinely flew and STILL fly EM recon missions off China and in international airspace at that. And China cried foul. We never violated Chinese airspace. We stole nothing from China. We just flew and collect EM transmissions. And yet, some of the Chinese members here declared we have no right to fly off China's coast even in international airspace.

So if we set up a honeypot and Chinese crackers broke through and stole useless data, why is it wrong for US to cry foul? Is it to you that unless real valuables are loss, no one have the right to call himself a victim? So if I tugged at your purse but took nothing, you will not call yourself a victim of harassment? If you locked your door and I rattled it persistently, you will not say I was trying to rob you?

Just as I thought, in sucking up to China, people will defy anything, from the laws of physics to common sense.

Maybe nothing happened at all and the US secret services just wanted to get more funds and needed some kind of justification. Maybe the US indeed did lose a lot of valid information and has to revert to double deception tactic, e.g. if I cry loud enough, the Chinese might think that it was a honeypot and the information are all crap.

Oh yeah, the world is full of suckers. You don't see how smart you sound?

Hey guys, you heard it here. Unless you are an American, you are a potential sucker!

The newspaper Washington Post (WAPO) cited a DSB study, of which the Pentagon said is partially dated...

Chinese Hackers Reportedly Compromised U.S. Designs For More Than 2 Dozen Weapons
A Defense Department spokesman said some findings of the Defense Science Board report were dated because much of its research was completed two years ago, but it had highlighted some security issues that needed attention.
What this mean is that if the Pentagon set up a honeypot for Chinese crackers, the DSB would have no clue about it. In fact, the Pentagon have no obligations to inform the DSB of its counter-espionage operations precisely because board members are not accountable to the Pentagon. Board members comes and go at the pleasure of the SecDef, not the Pentagon.

You are not seriously comparing flying near China to hacking are you?

It's like the childish game of I'm not touching you. True, you didn't go INTO China, but it is annoying and you have to admit that it is a form of the US trying to ridicule us and cut us down a peg.

I'm sure you would mind if we did the same thing right off the coast of America.

Hacking while it does more harm, is intelligence work. Every nation has it and I'm sure your CIA has way more funding than ours, well, maybe, some suggest not the case.

It is secret work and not done to provoke and make the other party look ridiculous.

Yes, I am. The issue is about indignation.

No, it have nothing to do with trying to humiliate China. I know about Signals Intelligence (SIGINT). I was a member of that community in my active duty years. We flew to collect data, not to embarrass anyone. Besides, when the enemy is defeated, it will be embarrassing enough.

I'm sure you would mind if we did the same thing right off the coast of America.
In fact, we would welcome you. We are the undisputed master at this game. China is not. Come to our shores and we will learn more about you than you would about US.

how is hacking indignation? What do you think the CIA spends money on? Candy? It just so happens when US announces something like this it seems like the US is a victim and we the Chinese did something so underhanded, but when China does this it seems like an inevitability, because the world perceives us as technologically weaker.

IT doesn't matter of what your intentions are, if we were on the road and I was behind you tailgate you in a better car, even without the intention, you would still consider it annoying and other drivers would consider my lack of respect to you due to having the better car.

Lastly you just proved what I said, whether you are doing this on purpose or not you are acting like, we will do what we want and nothing you can do about it regardless of your feelings.

One is in public for everyone to see and the other is in private you tell me, how would you like your humiliation? Where everybody sees or where nobody knows, where you can let the world know on your own terms?

.
you should say this, only sucker believe these story.......
And there are enough of those in China whom believe that.

One should wonder why the US media is reporting these stories if the smart Americans don't believe them anyway. Don't tell me that it's for the Chinese readers to consume, the 2 % who have a decent command of English.

As I said before, the most secretly data the US have is locked under a stand alone server. Where there are NO internet connection to that server, what scientist or technician do to the information, they need to do it in there and there are electro-magnetic gate in the door to erase EVERYHTING when the said person got out.

There are no way China or any one can HACK those information, that's exactly the reason why US forbid company like ZTE or Huiwei bidding on project related to US ground telecommunication infrastructure. As far as I know UK and Australia also run on these system. I reckon China is too. That mean whatever you can hack in China either not too confidential or those are just traps

Don't ask me how I know, I just know this.

People here need a serious read up on spying.......

The need to suck up to China outweighs the need for logical thinking and common sense.

Everything is a honeypot.

Several terabytes of honeypot F-35 data was stolen here. :omghaha:

Computer Spies Breach Fighter-Jet Project - WSJ.com

WASHINGTON -- Computer spies have broken into the Pentagon's $300 billion Joint Strike Fighter project -- the Defense Department's costliest weapons program ever -- according to current and former government officials familiar with the attacks.

Similar incidents have also breached the Air Force's air-traffic-control system in recent months, these people say. In the case of the fighter-jet program, the intruders were able to copy and siphon off several terabytes of data related to design and electronics systems, officials say, potentially making it easier to defend against the craft.

Another example.

Noshir Gowadia, a former B-2 engineer convicted of helping China, is another honeypot. The CIA planted him there to give bad information to China. The entire trial was fake and he's not actually in prison.

Ex-B-2 engineer guilty of helping China develop stealth cruise missile

A former B-2 stealth bomber engineer has been convicted of helping China develop a cruise missile that can evade heat-seeking, air-to-air missiles. Prosecutors said he sold the classified technology to pay for his luxury home in Hawaii.

The source of the story is the US gov. How else would Washington Post or any other media outlet have known what happened?

Did I say that I believe what was said or are you just too quick to projecting your inner self onto others? Hey, I'm not the person who suffers an identity crisis.

China has dismissed US claims hackers procured blueprints for America’s most advanced weaponry. Beijing stated the allegations underestimate the Chinese people’s intellect and that China is perfectly capable of producing its own weapons.

A US Science Board report leaked this week alleged the Chinese hackers had obtained access to the designs of two dozen major US weapons systems in what amounted to “billions of dollars of combat advantage to China.”

The Washington Post, who saw a copy of the report, intimated that such information could be used by the Chinese government to speed up the development of their military. An unnamed official told the Post that China had saved themselves “25 years of research and development” by stealing the plans.

Beijing reacted with ire, with Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Geng Yansheng dismissing the report as ridiculous.

"It both underestimates the Pentagon's defensive security abilities and the Chinese people's intelligence," said Geng in a news briefing.

He stressed that China had demonstrated on numerous occasions it has the ability “to build the weapons needed for national security."

"Recently China's aircraft carrier, new fighter jets and transport aircraft ... have clearly shown this," concluded Geng.

The Washington Post wrote that among the designs procured by the Chinese were blueprints for combat aircraft, ships and missiles defense systems for Europe, Asia and the Gulf. These included the advanced Patriot missile system, the F/A-18 fighter jet, the Black Hawk helicopter and the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

While Pentagon press secretary George Little told CNN on Tuesday claims that cyber-attacks had weakened US military capabilities were incorrect.

"Suggestions that cyberintrusions have somehow led to the erosion of our capabilities or technological edge are incorrect, we maintain full confidence in our weapons platforms," said Little.

The White House has accused Beijing repeatedly of hack attacks on US government and military systems. At the beginning of May the US Department of Defense formally condemned Chinese cyber-attacks, “some of which appear to be attributable directly to the Chinese government and military.”

“Hacking attacks are transnational and anonymous,” Hong Lei, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, said. “Determining their origins is extremely difficult. We don't know how the evidence in this so-called report can be tenable.”

The issue of cyber warfare has been a significant bone of contention in Sino-American relations lately, although Beijing has refuted all claims of cyber-attack on the US. Chinese President Xi Jingping is in America this week, where he will conduct talks with his American counterpart Barack Obama.

Cyber security is expected to be at the top of the agenda, as well as China’s growing military might and its claim on disputed territory in the East China Sea.
