Qualcomm, ZTE and China Mobile to collaborate on 5G NR trials at 3.5 GHz
Qualcomm, ZTE, and China Mobile have announced plans to conduct interoperability testing and over-the-air field trials based on the 5G New Radio (NR) specifications being developed by 3GPP.
THE next-generation, or 5G, mobile communications services will create a market valued at US$984 billion and provide 9.5 million new jobs in China by 2035, industry officials said yesterday.
China Mobile and its hardware partners hope to achieve multi-gigabit per second data rates at significantly lower latency and better reliability than today's network to showcase the possibilities of 5G technologies.
The announcement confirms reports that China Mobile is planning to accelerate its schedule for 5G development.
"5G is very important for future development and we have put much resources on 5G research, standardisation, and industrialization, and built a 5G joint innovation center to cultivate the cross-industry innovation", said Wang Xiaoyun, General Manager at China Mobile.
Shenzhen-based ZTE is China's largest-listed telecommunications equipment supplier, while Qualcomm Technologies is the operating subsidiary of Nasdaq-listed mobile chip giant Qualcomm.
The 5G trials will operate in sub-6 GHz mid-band spectrum at 3.5 GHz, enabling commercial network launches based on
3GPPRel-15 standard compliant 5G NR infrastructure and devices.
In its upcoming 5G trials, China Mobile will implement prototype devices from Qualcomm Technologies and mobile base stations from ZTE on the 3.5GHz band, the spectrum on which the three companies aim to test ubiquitous subscriber coverage and other 5G user cases, according to Qualcomm. "Trials based on the global 3GPP 5G standard, such as this, are critical to ensure timely deployment of 5G networks and continuing our long history of leadership integrating advanced wireless technologies".

BEIJING,February 22, SinoCast --China's5G technology research and development test's second phase was officially launched inSeptember 2016and Huawei,Ericsson,ZTE,Datang, Nokia and Shanghai Bell, Samsung and other enterprises participated in the test.
The IMT-2020 (5G) promotion group is organizing the implementation of the test andChina Mobile,China Telecom,China Unicom,DOCOMO Beijing Communications Laboratoriesand CAICT formed a test group. They currently plan the world's largest 5G test out-field inBeijing'sHuairou and complete the planning of 30 stations' site. Meanwhile,Spreadtrum, MTK and other chip companies and Keysight Technologies, R&S and other instrument companies also participated in the test.
Recently, Huawei, based on the constructed out-field in Huairou, took the first to carry out the out-field performance test and the interoperability and docking test of instrument/chip companies under the 3.5GHz 5G NR, marking the test's second phase rung up the curtain.
With the completion of Huairou out-field's site planning,Ericsson,ZTE,Datangand other enterprises are also stepping up the out-field environment construction and will orderly carry out the second phase work according to the plan.
