Chinese film industry aims to challenge Hollywood

Interesting. Source?

This has only highlight the power of uncontrolled and non-traditional types of media. While the Chinese government might have had to right idea with the 50 cent party, they're execution is absolutely horrible and a complete backfire. What they should have done is fund organizations not individuals.

A good example is some of the jewish/pro-israeli organizations out there. They have the ability to pressure and pull unfavorable media from publishers and even places like youtube.

There has been an article on yahoo news talking about how the USAF started hiring people who would post comments supporting the American armed forces on the internet. The original article is gone now.

That's true.

However, have you seen the backlash towards those "pro-Israeli" organisations? It's so enormous that I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it, look at the flotilla raid reaction for instance.

Maybe they are losing competence?

Nope outside of the East Asians students here no one knows about K-pop.
I saw some K-pop videos on the frontpage of youtube. And over 99% of the comments were in English. It's the same with Anime here. They have a small niche market in America, but it's growing.

Yeah the east asian students here speak English pretty well for most part.

That is a good point, which is why I think there is enormous potential in the market for "Educational" movies and video games.

The question is how do you make it interesting to children... a lot of people have tried, and have had mixed success.

The challenge is in creating memorable characters which might be brand worthy. Kids' Merchandising based on the animation characters will sometimes earn more than the movie itself. For example, Pixar earned more by selling its 'cars' merchandise than the box office collection of all its movies put together.
Actually lot of animation is done in China. But they are mostly outsourced work . Most of the animated TV series of Disney and Nick are done either in India, China or Korea.

Another interesting point does soft power matter? Take the case of Iran, teenagers there may drink coke and wear designer jeans but they will also go to mosque to hear anti-American clerics.

I believe this may come sooner as I have already seen traces of it. Especially in the context of "China rising, get aboard if you're smart". Many business people Jim Roger and I know of others are teaching their children Chinese and parents are increasingly thinking of learning Chinese as a good investment. (can't recall exactly but I've read that Chinese has displaced German as the 3rd or 4th most studied second language in American k-12)

true. iranians drink coke, listen to english music, then listen to an anti-american sermon at the mosque. they see absolutely nothing conflicting about that. to them, coke is not american, it is INTERNATIONAL, nothing to do with the US at all.

however, having soft power over another country means being able to influence its decisions. US movies instills fear and awe of the US armed forces in people that watch it casually. Of course, brainwashing never works for thoes that are alert, but you don't need to brainwash everyone, you don't even need to brainwash the majority, you just need to influence their decisionmaking slightly to destabilize a country.

I think china does have the talent to beat Hollywood. Most Hollywood movies are all about gloss and not quality. I don't know about mainland movies but hk cinema is probably one of the best. I have watched countless hk movies like infernal affairs trilogy, election, exile, protege, running out of time, chongking express, overheard, confessions of pain etc. Also the departed, Oscar winner was a remake of infernal affairs and so many other Chinese movies are being remade.
But this year has been dull for hk cinema.
