Uber is using electric cars in Chicago as part of new test program
  • By Dante D'Orazio

The next time you hail an Uber in Chicago, you might be greeted with an electric car you've never seen before. That's because the car service has partnered with Chinese carmaker BYD to let Uber drivers rent or lease the company's electric e6 wagon. The vehicle, which can get up to 186 miles per charge, is already used in some taxi fleets around the world. Reuters reports that Uber has been running a pilot program with the electric cars for a few weeks in Chicago, and 25 drivers are already on the road with the vehicle.

The program, which is aimed at low-cost Uber X drivers, offers traditional leases as well as a $200-per-week rental that lets drivers use the vehicle during their Uber shifts. The cars are sold and managed out of a local Chicago dealership, Green Wheels USA, and is part of existing Uber efforts to hook its drivers up with cars that they can buy, rent, or lease. According to Reuters, an Uber spokesperson says the program could expand to other cities in the future.

(Reuters) - Uber Inc said on Friday it struck a deal with Chinese automaker BYD Co Ltd to test a fleet of electric cars for its drivers.

The test program, which kicked off a few weeks ago in Chicago and could eventually expand to other cities, is the Silicon Valley startup's first attempt to focus on an electric vehicle, said Uber spokeswoman Lauren Altmin."We've seen interest in the program already from current and potential Chicago partners (drivers)," Altmin said.

Uber, which allows users to summon rides on their smartphones, originally started with a luxury town-car service but in many cities has added UberX, a low frills service with nonprofessional drivers using personal cars. The BYD offering is aimed at those drivers.

The electric car is part of Uber's program to help drivers buy or lease new or used cars. The BYD e6 vehicles are available through Green Wheels USA, a Chicago car dealership that focuses on electric and hybrid cars and also builds EV charging stations.

About 25 BYD vehicles are currently being used by Uber drivers in Chicago, and the hope is to bring that number to a couple of hundred by the end of the year, according to Doug Snower, Green Wheels' president.

Uber began talking to BYD and Green Wheels late last year, Altmin said.

For BYD the deal with Uber could be a step toward the long-held goal of selling its cars to U.S. consumers. The company, whose name stands for "build your dream", is a major automaker in China, but its e6 vehicle has thus far only been used in pilot programs in the United States.

Nissan Motor Co Ltd and Tesla Motors Inc are better known in the United States for their electric cars, the Leaf and the Model S. Uber would not comment on why it had picked a company with a relatively unknown brand.

The e6 is larger than many other electric cars, however, and is being used in London by chauffer service Thriev.

BYD gained Warren Buffett's backing in 2009 and announced plans to sell its e6 electric car in the United States the following year. Since then, BYD's U.S. business has focused mainly on electric buses for public transportation.

BYD publicized the program on its Facebook page but declined to comment on the deal with Uber.

The Facebook post, which has a picture of the vehicle, says the e6 has a 186 mile range on a single charge. It also says financing is available from BYD-approved lenders.

Green Wheels is offering several options to drivers interested in the e6. The most popular program, Snower said, allows an Uber driver to pay $200 a week to use an e6 for his or her driving shift. The vehicle is then returned to a Green Wheels lot, where it is charged until it is used again.

Drivers can also enter into a more traditional lease or a lease-to-own program, Snower said.

BYD heralds its vehicle sales in Japan
March 4, 2015

TOKYO -- Can the Chinese succeed where the Koreans and Americans largely have failed: penetrating Japan’s auto market?

BYD Co., the Chinese electric vehicle maker says it has become the first Chinese automaker to sell vehicles in Japan.

BYD ballyhooed the transaction as a breakthrough for China’s auto industry that cracked open “a nation built on engineering excellence” with high-tech, environmentally friendly vehicles.

The catch: It is supplying buses. And only a handful of them.

A Kyoto city bus company took delivery of five long-range, battery-powered buses late last month, BYD said in a release.

Still, the move is a milestone, said Liu Xueliang, general manager of BYD’s Asia Pacific auto group.

“The Japanese market has stringent requirements for technology and quality,” the executive said in the release. “The delivery of the BYD buses means a great recognition for BYD as well as for China’s technology and quality.”

BYD’s electric buses use iron phosphate batteries, in-wheel hub motors and regenerative braking. Iron phosphate chemistry has the advantage of being fire-safe and nontoxic, BYD says. The buses have a single-charge range of 155 miles.

As non-Japanese brands know all too well, making inroads with Japan’s finicky and nationalistic consumers is tough.

Even South Korea’s Hyundai, on a tear elsewhere in the world, failed to gain traction in Japan. In 2009, it stopped selling passenger cars here after eight years of trying.

But Hyundai didn’t give up completely. It still sells, you guessed it, buses. And not many: Last year it sold just 79 in Japan.

The usa is ultra nationalistic about cars
Many times they dont necessarily appreciate the investments in having cars produced locally especially when their economy shows signs of improvement
