Aug 27, Colombo: A high-power Chinese defense delegation led by Chinese Defence Minister Liang Guanglie will arrive in Sri Lanka this Wednesday (August 29) for a five-day visit, a local media report said.
China is providing US$ 100 million (Rs. 13.2 billion) for army welfare projects initiated by the Ministry of Defense, a report in Sunday Times said quoting official sources.
According to the report, the government plans to set up accommodation and infrastructure facilities in army camps in the north and east with Chinese assistance.
Liang's visit follows the Sri Lanka Army Commander Jagath Jayasuriya's visit to Beijing in June this year.
Chinese Defense Minister who met Sri Lanka Army Commander in Beijing has reiterated China's support to boost military cooperation between the two countries to a higher level.
During his visit the Chinese Defense Minister is expected to visit the Sapugaskanda Defense Staff College, the Panagoda army cantonment, Galle and possibly Hambantota.
China has also announced a grant of US$1.5 million for modernization of the Defense Services College in Colombo for children of security forces personnel and the police.
Another high-powered Chinese delegation led by the Chinese People's Congress' Vice President Wu Bango will arrive in Sri Lanka next month a media report quoting an External Affairs Ministry official said.
The 96-member delegation is to arrive in the country on September 15 and visit Hambantota and Northern and Eastern Provinces to observe the current developments in the country and explore new possibilities for Chinese ventures in Sri Lanka.
