Chinese companies to help Malaysia build deep sea port

It could spell doom for Port Klang and Port Tanjung Pelepas unless China have some 'other' plans to boost shipping. Port Klang town itself is dying.

Malacca housing price now so hot because of this.

Only India may need ports. For the rest of the world especially China, it's just a waste. Get used to it :)

Indian logic.. everything they did, they did it right.. everything China did, they did it wrong...

This project will be a total wastage. Global trade today is shrinking, and their seems to be no respite. There is already an overcapacity in ports.

Government funds and companies have no concept of the market! Better throw the money in the bins.

Listen dude, China is all set to open the world's largest "Smart" port in Shanghai with nearly 140 lithium-ion battery powered AGVs in 2017.

Educate yourself. :D

On the other hand, Malaysia is neither a big economy, nor is growing or expected to grow that rapidly, can't compete for international trade because it is declining, and facing overcapacity.

While Malaysia, is looking forward to international trade. Malaysia already has reasonable port facilities to handle its own traffic.

Where do do you think some of that "Export Goods" shipped from Singapore to the rest of world came from?

Singapore's physical goods trade are mainly
1) transhipment between country A (ex. Germany) and country B (ex China) with Singapore playing the role of entrepot (pls check definition of entrepot by yourself), and

2) Further processing of goods for re-export. And large majority of such goods are imported from Malaysia. Fact is Malaysia is the second largest import partner of Singapore. US is their largest import partner but the goods imported from US are largely capital goods and services, not semi- finished goods and raw materials.

Point (1) and (2) above means, a new sea port in Malaysia can take over large portion of Singapore's transhipment to China, including Hong Kong, especially when China has vested interest in the new Malaysia port.

If factories using Malaysian semi-finished goods and raw materials will to shift to Malaysia, demand for new sea port definitely will grow.

And one last very important event is Singapore is pivoting towards US's South China Sea intervention, and China is economically strong to built new port along Malacca Straits and divert large South China Sea route trade away from Singapore. Not less than one trillion usd value of trade goes to China using this route .
